First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mercadona.
Cashier Assistant
In the first interview, which was a group setting, they told us about the salary scale, contracts, compensation, and that the contract was permanent from day one. But that was not true at all. They hired all of us as temporary summer workers, with no end date or notice period for contract termination. As the season neared its end, they would just tell you, “You finish tomorrow.” When you leave another job to come here, you are left with a bewildered look on your face.
- What is your availability to start working?
Supermarket Stocker
We had a group stage where we introduced ourselves and chatted about a hypothetical scenario: what each of us would do if we were all stranded on a desert island. We discussed how tasks would be divided and who would be in charge of making decisions. After that, there was an individual interview.
- Tell me about your availability.
- What studies have you completed?

This was one of the worst interviews I've ever had. They don't insult you directly, but they greet you with a smile and then ask questions that make no sense. They use passive-aggressive interview techniques to see how you react, if you get angry or not. Most of the questions were about my personal life: my parents' and sister's jobs, why my sister isn't independent yet, if I have a partner and what they do. It feels like they're trying to recruit for NASA instead of a supermarket, they're like a cult. They asked if my parents were paying for my degree, and when I said yes and that I was grateful, they stared at me and in a cold, aggressive tone asked, 'Then why do you want to work?'. That's what I mean by passive-aggressive questions; maybe it doesn't seem like much in writing, but the tone is everything.
- What is your parents' job?
- What is your sister's job?
- What are three qualities you consider essential for working anywhere?

You're in a barren area, 130 km southwest of a mining camp, the closest settlement, and 120 km off your flight path. The temperature is 40 degrees Celsius. You're wearing light clothes and have scarves; collectively you have about 2 euros in coins and 40 euros in bills; a pack of cigarettes, and a pen. Before the plane caught fire, you managed to save: a flashlight, a small mirror, a 2-liter bottle of vodka, a compass, a coat for each person, a pair of sunglasses for each person, a pack of gauze, a jar of salt tablets, 1 liter of water per person, a utility knife, an aerial map of the region, a raincoat, a .45 caliber pistol, a red and white parachute, and a book titled “Edible Desert Animals”. All items are intact, and the group has agreed to stick together. What five items would you rescue for survival?”
