First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at La-Z-Boy.
Intern
The process was all behavioral interviews with a small business case part where I had to analyze an excel sheet and talk about my analysis and key takeaways/business implications. There were two rounds before they made a final offer decision.
- Tell me about a time you showed leadership.
Sales Associate
Applied via Indeed, got contacted by an associate a couple weeks later to set up an interview. Responded and set it up, but then the manager called and said we'd have to reschedule since he wasn't free. Then the associate contacted me again saying the manager wasn't available and I needed to reschedule. This showed disorganization. As suggested on Indeed, I showed up 20 minutes early and was ready. Only the manager was there, plus some customers. I waited almost 30 minutes past my interview time, even though I was early. I looked around the showroom while the manager helped customers, until he came over and said, 'if you waited this long, you're hired!' He then admitted he didn't have my resume, though I sent it with my application and via email. I explained my background and work history and answered some basic questions. He asked about reliable transportation, which I confirmed and said I lived close. Then he asked if I owned a car, which was odd for an in-store role. His attitude changed and he said, 'well, I only really needed to hire him' (pointing to another associate), 'but I wanted to see who could pull more sales. If you make enough sales, you could take my spot as store manager.' It felt weird advertising the job to me like that. The interview ended with him giving me his card and telling me to email my resume. I did and followed up, but never heard back. Ghosted. The whole experience was bad, and the interview was tough because they were unprepared and unprofessional. If the interview was this disorganized, I can't imagine working there.
- What's your estimate for the store's annual revenue generation potential?
- What actions would you take if an order was cancelled by a customer?
Sales Manager
It was a pretty straightforward and friendly interview process. They asked basic sales questions that any seasoned sales manager should be able to handle. I didn't really get the full picture of the job until I started doing it, since it's a sales associate role with some added managerial duties.
- How would you manage a situation where phones are ringing, a shipment has arrived, and there are more customers than employees available?
EHS Coordinator
First, a recruiter call. Then, an interview with the regional EHS lead. The interview style was polite and friendly but somewhat aggressive, as if trying to assess responses under pressure. After that, an interview with the environmental regional lead. They were the 'good cop'.
- What are the standards for drinking water?
- What is measured in water treatment plants?
- Why shouldn't we hire you?
