First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gopuff.
Lead Data Analyst
I applied for a Data Scientist role, but the HR said that position doesn't exist anymore and offered me an interview for Lead Data Analyst. The HR initially told me the salary range was 55k-80k, but then corrected it to 55k-70k, which seemed a bit off. The HR's email stated it would be a screening interview with no technical questions, yet they unexpectedly asked a SQL question during the call, which I felt was unprofessional. Right after that initial call, I got an invitation for a technical interview (live coding with SQL or Python), but I declined the interview due to the unpleasant experience.
- Could you explain the purpose of a window function?
Analyst
Beforehand they really made sure to explain what the interview would entail. I thought it would be a code-a-long SQL exercise, as is standard in the industry, but instead they shared their screen showing a SQL question inside a spreadsheet, which really didn't give a good impression of Gopuff as a "tech" company. I was then asked questions that I was completely unprepared for and were unrelated to my actual work experience, meaning I wasn't able to demonstrate my actual, real-life skillset. The interviewer was rude and unprofessional, starting the interview by criticizing the company I currently work for, then going on to ask questions about my current company's strategy which I could obviously not disclose and clearly a tactic to steal ideas. To top it off, even after taking time to do two rounds of interviews, the recruiter gave me no feedback and sent an automated rejection email instead.
- Can you explain something as if I were a five-year-old?
- Can you answer questions about my current company's strategy?
Director of Operations
The recruiting process started off well with knowledgeable staff and managers. I progressed through multiple rounds. Because I was overqualified for the initial role, they offered me a chance at an unadvertised, higher-level position. Things were going smoothly until the final interview with the VP. He was late, rude, and struggled with basic interview questions, which was unexpected. He even yawned during his introduction, which immediately put me off. With over 20 years as a hiring manager, I found his behavior unacceptable for his level. I'd seen negative reviews before but dismissed them, but now I understand. While I believe many good people work there, that VP clearly needs training, as his team seems to be supporting him, and he's out of touch with the frontline.
- Can you commit to working late hours, as the company's busiest periods are at night, requiring you to balance standard office hours with additional late-night work?
Principal Software Engineer
Applied on the website and heard back from the recruiter. The first step was a recruiter chat about my background, the role, and the interview steps. Then, I had a round with the hiring manager, which again covered my background and past projects, but also included technical questions and a coding challenge. The final round consisted of three parts: system design, coding, and critical thinking. All of these were manageable and fit within the time given, and the interviewers were prepared and clear about what they needed.
- Standard system design questions
- Standard coding questions
- Practical problems similar to those encountered in the role.
