First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at George Washington University.
Assistant Director
I had 3 interviews over 3 weeks and thought they went pretty well. After the last one, I tried to follow up, but no one ever got back to me. I only found out the position was filled when I checked my application status online. I guess they could have sent a rejection email, but ghosting me was not cool.
- Can you describe your preferred work setting?
Recruiting Coordinator
I interviewed for a role at GWUH and was disappointed with the hiring process. I was told it would be a 30-minute conversation with one person, but when I arrived, it was a panel interview with three people that lasted 90 minutes. This change wasn't communicated beforehand. I did my best, but the lack of clear instructions felt unprofessional. The interviewer said I did well and was a great fit. I sent a thank-you email and followed up a week later, but they hadn't made a decision and would provide an update. I never heard back. I followed up again a month later about the role status and received no response. For GWUH, ghosting a candidate after a multi-person interview process is disappointing. Respect and communication matter, especially for candidates who take time off work and prepare. This reflects poorly on HR/recruiting, not the interviewers, who were pleasant.
- What was your motivation for applying to this position?
Career Advisor
Had 3 interviews. It was pretty straightforward. First up was a screening call, then a more formal interview, and finally a presentation to everyone at the office. The presentation was like I was advising a student. The people were nice and didn't try to trick me with questions. They made the atmosphere relaxed without making it feel too easy.
- Can you describe a past issue with a coworker and how you resolved it?
Professor
I applied online via the GWU career portal. An assistant professor contacted me to set up an online teaching demo (20 mins) followed by a Q&A (25 mins) within 5 days. The hiring committee was the audience. I picked the topic related to potential courses. I sent a thank you note the same day. No response. A week later, I followed up with the committee about the status. Still no response. This was unprofessional and disrespectful.
- Could you answer some technical questions related to your teaching demonstration to assess your knowledge?
