First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at George Washington University.
Program Coordinator
I applied online and got an email asking me to come in for an interview. The interview was about an hour long. I spoke with the director in a formal interview, then had a conversation with the associate director, and after that, I was introduced to the rest of the team. Everyone seemed really nice and welcoming! I didn't hear back for over two weeks after the interview, so I reached out. The director mentioned she was checking my references. Four days after that, I got the call offering me the job.
- Can you tell me about your resume and skills?
- How do you see your skills being applied to this role?
Executive Coordinator
I applied as an internal candidate by sending in my resume and cover letter. Then, I had a meeting with a group that included the assistant dean, the person who would be my supervisor, and the office director. After that, the supervisor let me know I got the job, and then it was announced to everyone in the office by email.
- Were you ready to supervise employees?
Program Coordinator
The interview process started off great. The managing director, accounting manager, and the person I would be replacing were all super nice and open. First, I had a Skype interview with two people, which was pretty casual, just a get-to-know-you chat. Then, I went to an in-person interview in DC with those same two people plus a financial manager. We talked more about financial and accounting duties, but it still felt really relaxed and conversational. I got an offer a week later. I asked for a day to think about it and then made a counter offer. I figured since things were so comfortable and the hiring manager seemed flexible, negotiating would be fine. I was wrong. Two days after my counter offer, they rescinded the offer via a two-sentence email, saying they were going in a different direction. No explanation was given when I asked. While I get they could do that, it seemed extreme not to even discuss salary. It's odd because, as women, we're told to negotiate. I expected more from a university. The start was good, but the end was really unprofessional and embarrassing for GW.
- Can you tell me about your financial and accounting experience, and how you manage multiple responsibilities?
- What are your strategies for staying organized when handling numerous tasks simultaneously?
