First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Electricity Supply Board (ESB).
Printer Operator
I booked the interview online via the ESB website. They sent an email after booking with the topics that would be covered, which helped me prepare. It was a competency-based interview, so I had to answer questions using the STAR method. The interview panel included an HR representative and the print team manager. They were both very approachable and made me feel at ease during the interview.
- Can you walk us through your previous work experience?
- Describe an instance where you achieved significant results.
- Tell me about a time you collaborated effectively within a team.
Power Systems Engineer
The interview process was a smooth competency-based one. Before each question, the interviewer would explain the competencies being assessed, which made it engaging and easy to answer. The team lead explained the function's responsibilities, how they manage stakeholders, and what I would be responsible for. They were attentive to my responses and questions. The entire process from interview to offer took less than a week and was a positive experience.
- Can you share an instance where you encountered a difficult individual or group? Describe the situation and your approach to handling it.
Graduate Program
I recently went through the ESB interview process for an internship position and found it to be very professional, supportive, and well-structured. The application was straightforward, and communication from the recruitment team was clear and timely. The interview itself was a mix of behavioural and technical questions, with a strong focus on teamwork, problem-solving, and motivation for working at ESB. They asked about group project experience, how I handle challenges, and my interest in sustainability and innovation — which are core values at ESB. The interviewers were friendly and encouraging, which made me feel at ease. It felt more like a conversation than a test, and they gave me the opportunity to ask questions about the role and the team.
- Can you share an instance where you encountered a challenge while working in a team and how you addressed it?
Technical Expert
It was a single-stage interview conducted via Zoom or Teams. The panel included one HR representative and two members from the team I would potentially join. The interview lasted about an hour. There were some standard HR questions like availability and a run-through of my CV. They also asked four competency-based questions focusing on Delivering Results, Applying Technical Skills and Knowledge, Teamwork, and Collaborating and Communicating with Stakeholders. Some of the 'tell me about a time' questions felt a bit generic, like they were pulled from a bank. One interviewer seemed distracted and disengaged, and the team was late for the interview.
- Can you share an instance where you collaborated with a cross-functional team to achieve a delivery?
