Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Electricity Supply Board (ESB).
Developer
Interviewed with the hiring manager, HR, and another manager. Had basic HR questions followed by four questions about key competencies. It was pretty straightforward, I recommend just having clear examples and taking your time. There was an opportunity at the start to read through my CV, which was a good chance to settle myself.
- Can you describe a situation where you collaborated effectively within a team?
Engineer
This interview is a mix of technical and general questions. For the technical part, you'll get a hypothetical situation and will need to propose a solution. The general part will check your safety, teamwork, leadership, and other skills. Use the STAR method to answer: explain the situation, your task, the action you took, and the result.
- Tell us about a time you showed safety expertise on a project.
Student Engineer
College recruitment involved seeing various positions advertised, then sending in a CV and cover letter. Everything was quiet for a few weeks, then an interview invitation came. An example of what to expect at the interview was sent via email. On the day, there was a meet-and-greet with HR at the head office, then off to the interview room with 1 HR and 1 engineering staff member. It was a 30-minute interview, all very pleasant. Within a few days, an invitation to complete a medical questionnaire was sent, followed by an offer within another few days.
- Can you tell me about a time you took the initiative?
