First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Duke University.
Technical Assistant
The professor is gonna look at your background and previous experience and probably ask why you are interested in this position and what motivates you to apply for this job. Then, based on your answers, your experience, and how well you present yourself, they will figure out if you are a good fit for the role.
- Could you tell me about your experience and why you are interested in this job?
Software Engineer
The interview process was pretty standard, focusing more on my technical background, how I solve problems, and my teamwork skills, rather than super tough coding tests. It started with an email screen, then a quick virtual chat with a project lead. They asked about my past programming work, the tools I've used, and how I handle debugging and working with others. They seemed really interested in my Python and web tech experience, and my ability to work with research and analytics folks.
- Can you share which programming languages and frameworks you're most skilled with, and provide examples of how you've applied them in previous projects?
Graduate Student
They asked about my past intern experiences in a chatty way. I stumbled a bit, but the interviewer was really nice and encouraged me to continue. They also asked why I'm interested in the current program and if I've done any personal side projects.
- Can you share your previous internship experiences?
- What motivates your interest in this particular program?
- Have you undertaken any personal projects out of your own interest?
Marketing
I first talked to HR on day one. Then, I had a second interview on the same day with 6 different people. The questions weren't too hard, but in the last interview, I realized the leader already had someone else in mind. She was worried about my lack of higher education experience, even though the job description didn't require it. If it was required, why did they call me? The people were very nice though.
- How would you describe your management style?
