First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Program Director
The interview process was in-person and conducted by the Center Director. The center seemed very clean and well-managed. The Director was professional and asked good questions. There was also a tour. They said candidates would be contacted about next steps or decisions. However, it's been almost two months with no contact. It's unprofessional and hurtful to ghost candidates. They should at least let people know when they aren't moving forward.
- Can you share an experience with a child that influenced you and inspired your desire to work with or support children?
Teen Coordinator
It was a quick hiring process. The first interview was virtual and with one person. After that, I was offered a second interview. The second interview was in person with the COO. I had to complete an assignment by the end of the week. Then, I was invited for a third interview. This one was more casual and was with both the COO and the CEO. I got the job offer in this interview and received the official offer letter over the weekend. I really appreciated the consistent communication from the hiring team.
- Can you share your experiences working with young people?
Executive Recruiter
My resume and application got picked. I scheduled a call that was supposed to be a phone screen, but it was really an interview and lasted about 45 minutes to an hour. Then I interviewed with the person I'd report to. This is where things went bad. The interviewer was super distracted because of a national convention and a long travel day. They weren't really paying attention and didn't seem interested, even though I fit the role's requirements and have a good history in recruiting. Their room wasn't ready, so the interview was from a hallway. Honestly, they should have just rescheduled. The interview involved me going over my resume, answering two questions, and hearing about their work. I asked about what excites them about BGCA's future and how the role could make their job easier. Their response was basically 'nothing, you can't make my job easier!' They also mentioned the travel was closer to 50% rather than the 40% stated earlier, which feels like a misalignment on the role. I was told I'd hear back after the convention. The department sounds chaotic and disorganized with broken processes, which is exactly why they need someone like me who's process-driven and gets results. But this experience really changed my view of the organization. I sent thank you notes to both interviewers, but neither replied. It took over a month to get a rejection. I'm worried the Boys & Girls Club is becoming like many other large non-profits: bureaucratic, with conservative leadership that doesn't represent the kids they serve. I'm not interested in working there anymore, but I'll keep volunteering because those kids deserve better representation at all levels.
- Can you share an instance of the most challenging search you've handled?
- What aspects of BGCA's future do you find most compelling?
- In your opinion, how could the individual filling this position contribute to making your responsibilities more manageable?
Marketing and Development Coordinator
I interviewed for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northern RI a month ago. I had two interviews in total. The first interview was a video call and the second interview an on-site visit. Both went well. The Chief Development Officer thanked me for meeting with her both times and said she would be in touch. I haven't heard anything in over three weeks now. It's not a good practice to ghost candidates when they've taken time out of their day to not only speak with you about an open role, but also travel for an on-site visit. The communication could have been more clear.
