I first talked to a recruiter who said my background matched what they were looking for and basically guaranteed me an interview. I told her my salary expectations, and when I asked if it was in the role's budget, she was vague, saying they were “open.” I took it positively. Then, I had to complete a two-question personality test. After submitting it, I was ghosted for two weeks until I got a notification that the role was filled. I didn't get any feedback on why they didn't proceed. It's frustrating that they base decisions on a short questionnaire instead of human interaction, but I suspect my salary expectations were too high, and they saved money by hiring someone else. It's a tough world out there!

I first connected with a recruiter via email, and then we scheduled a Teams call. After that, I had four more interviews with different people, all conducted over Teams video calls, with each interview lasting around 30 minutes. It was a pretty standard interview process. Unfortunately, after completing all four interviews, I received a generic rejection email stating they decided to pursue other candidates. A phone call or even a personalized email would have at least made me feel like my time was respected.

I had conversational phone interviews with two partners and one talent recruiter from BKD. The partners asked more job-specific questions and discussed my prior experience. With the BKD talent recruiter, we talked about the company in general and the size and makeup of the office for the position I applied for. Everyone was really friendly and happy to answer any questions I had. Make sure you come prepared with questions for the second half of the calls.

So I interviewed at the BKD office in Indianapolis. The people there were super nice. The day started with about an hour where they explained the whole interview process to everyone, kind of like a group session. Then, partner-level interviews happened for about an hour. When you weren't interviewing, you could hang out with the staff and other interns. After the interviews, we had lunch, which was also part of the interview. We sat at tables with a mix of interns and managers/partners, and just had casual chats. Remember, this lunch is part of the interview, so stay sharp, but it's okay to talk about stuff besides accounting. They seemed really friendly and emphasized having good working relationships and a team atmosphere.
