First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Toolstation.
Sales Assistant
This was a horrible interview experience. The interview itself was basic and okay, but their feedback was unhelpful. While it's acceptable to reject a candidate, they resorted to a phone call to label me a job hopper and accuse me of "just looking for more money." It was very rude, as they could have simply stated my rejection and ended the conversation.

Category Manager
So there were two rounds. First, I spoke with the director. Then, the second round was with both the director and the hiring manager, and I had to present. The interviews were positive, they challenged me when they needed to, and they were both personable and professional. It seemed like a good environment based on the short time I was there.
- Can you provide an overview of the company’s market situation and opportunities?
Sales Associate
Super chill interview, they're a really relaxed company so it makes things way easier and friendly. First, you apply online and then they email you to book a phone interview. The recruitment team is really good at staying in touch and making you feel welcome. The phone interview is the toughest part, I think. The recruiter was super nice, asked about me personally, my availability (they're great at working around your studies if you're a student and know it's your priority), my past job experiences, and a few questions about health and safety, what tool station is, if I work well in a team, and when I've delivered great customer service. This interview lasted about ten minutes. A few hours later, they told me they wanted to invite me to a second interview, which was a week later. This interview was on Google Meet because the store wasn't open yet. I met the regional manager and store manager, and they were so lovely. They gave me an overview of the job, discussed what they'd expect from me, and asked what I expect from them. My availability, the shift patterns, and what a normal shift is like were discussed. They asked if I was comfortable talking to ALL customers and how I'd handle difficult customers. They gave me lots of chances to ask questions. This interview was around 30 minutes. A few days after the interview, I was contacted (they let you know when to expect contact). Then you sign the contracts and all that typical stuff. Overall, it was my best job interview experience; they're really down-to-earth people.

Frontend Web Developer
Had an initial chat with the head of engineering, which was pretty relaxed and included some technical questions. It felt good. Then I had a second interview with two lead developers. They asked more technical questions, but it was still chill. The interview part was good, but the recruiter was terrible at communicating. They didn't answer emails and would say they'd call but never did. I got a casual offer on a Friday and was told I'd get a formal one on Monday, but nothing came through even though they said they'd call later that day. Kind of felt strung along.
- Can you explain the difference between dumb and smart components?
