I applied online direct via Toolstation's website. Heard back in 24 hours about the next stage, which was a telephone interview. Had that 48 hours later and was then put forward for a face-to-face with the area manager. Found out if I was successful the day after. The interview was in a working store, which was fine, though I was told it might be distracting. Did a walk-around of the store. The Area Manager didn't ask for it, but I'd prepared a SWOT analysis for the store and we discussed it.

The online application was easy. I got an email in 3 days inviting me for an interview and asked for some documents and a SWOT analysis of Toolstation versus its competitors. I did this early one morning. First, I was given a quiz by a staff member on math and general questions, which was basic. After 20 minutes, the Area Manager came in and took me to another room. He was nice and asked expected questions with some small talk. I thought I did great, but I got an email saying I was unsuccessful. I know I could do this job easily. The atmosphere was friendly. I wasn't offered a drink, which would have been nice. The room was warm. After the 2-hour interview, they told me about the uniform and hours. They asked if I had questions, which I did. The salary offered was in the mid-£20k range, which isn't very competitive. This put me off, and I usually avoid roles without advertised salaries. I'm a bit bitter because I know I would have done well. I'd like to know why I was rejected. 'Competitive salary' doesn't mean what it used to.
