First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Smithbucklin.
Account Manager
I applied on LinkedIn and heard back from the recruiter via email to set up an interview. It was supposed to be a 3-stage process. Everything seemed to go really well, and they told me I was the perfect candidate. However, I ended up being ghosted for two weeks, and then I got a non-reply email saying they had chosen another candidate.
- Can you share an instance where you exceeded expectations for a client, considering 'going the extra mile' is one of our company values?
Graphic Designer
The interview process was pretty streamlined and moved quickly after I applied. I had a Zoom interview with both a recruiter and the hiring manager. It was about 45 minutes long, and we talked about my portfolio, my past jobs, and how I'd fit with Smithbucklin's culture and clients. The interviewer was nice and professional, asking good questions about my background and explaining the job well. It did seem like they had a strong internal person in mind though, given how fast they moved. I did appreciate them recognizing my experience and sending a polite follow-up. It was a good experience, but felt more like checking boxes than really exploring things, and it's worth noting that internal candidates might be a factor.
- Could you introduce yourself and go over your professional background?
- Can you detail your career path and employment history?
Executive Director
This was a terrible candidate experience with Smithbucklin. I applied for a top senior role covering two clients. After passing five rounds of interviews and testing, I was waiting for the sixth round. Then I saw they reposted the position and were still looking. They gave a nonchalant reply when I asked and kept me waiting for over two months, saying I was still considered. They hired someone much less qualified than me, with less education and experience, and no industry background. It seemed like he was chosen based on his appearance and vibe, similar to the previous hire. The whole process was disrespectful, disappointing, drawn out over many months, and misleading. The head of HR was overly friendly, but it felt fake. This company is opaque and phony, and it's hard to get straight answers. I put in a lot of effort, only to feel slapped in the face. I suspect their nonprofit clients also experience this. I will not be a candidate here again.
- Can you provide a specific and creative suggestion for organic growth?
Education Associate
The interview took place over Zoom, with each session lasting about 30 minutes to an hour. I spoke with my potential supervisor and a team member. It was a pretty standard interview process with questions and responses. It was easy to get ready for because all the questions were pretty normal. They noticed I was overqualified and increased my offer, although it still wasn't enough, it was nice they considered it.
- Can you share your background in non-profit education?
- Describe your communication style and your approach to solving difficult problems.
