Sales Associate
So after the initial part of the interview process which led to me being invited to the group event, I went to this recruitment event yesterday and got the offer today! So for anyone else looking to interview, I hope this helps you prepare for questions and what to expect. We kicked things off with a video about Selfridges, their successes, events, and values. Then we did an ice breaker where we chatted with the person next to us and then introduced them to the wider group. The questions were about their hobbies, where they're from, what they like, music, favorite food, etc. – basically just get to know them and show real interest and find common ground. I don't think this part is really evaluated, but I felt like I learned a lot about the people around me from it. Next, we had a group activity. We were divided into groups of four, with 16 people interviewing in total across four groups. There was a manager at each table to assist with questions during the activity and mostly to assess how you contribute to the group. The activity was scenario-based, something like: a customer needs help finding a gift for a neighbor who's an earth-friendly foodie and likes wine, how do you help them? They gave us bullet points to consider, like: how would you approach and interact with the customer; what questions would you ask; what items would you suggest; how would you make the experience special; and how would you encourage them to return. After that, each group had to present their solution to everyone else (about 30 seconds per person). I don't think they were looking for the best solution, but more how you collaborate, contribute your own ideas, listen to others, ensure everyone's on board, and justify your contributions based on Selfridges' values and the sales associate role. The last part was a 1:1 interview. For us, they interviewed four of us in the same room, so it was a bit loud, but it felt less intimidating because it was still 1:1, with each person at a separate table. The department manager interviewed us, asking competency-based questions using the STAR method. I was asked five questions: three 'Tell me a time when...' questions (solved a problem, part of a team, went above and beyond) and two 'What would you do if...' questions (customer wants a specific bag you don't have, customer has a language barrier). My advice is to thoroughly read the job description on their site as they already outline what they're looking for and the skills needed for a good sales associate, so always refer back to that when answering.
- Can you share an instance where you resolved an issue?
- Tell me about a time you worked as part of a team.
- Describe a situation where you exceeded expectations for someone.
Administrative Assistant
it's a structured series of interactions between me and a potential employer, designed to assess my suitability for the role. It typically involves multiple stages, including initial screening, interviews with various stakeholders, and potentially assessments or background checks. The overarching goal is to determine if I possess the necessary skills, experience, and cultural fit for the position and the organization.
- Regarding my interest in fashion?
Visual Merchandiser
The interview process was thorough but engaging and well-structured. It started with an initial screening call from HR, which focused on my background, availability, and reasons for applying. They also asked about my understanding of the Selfridges brand, which I appreciated—it showed they cared about cultural fit. The second stage was an interview with a member of the Visual Merchandising team. This was more in-depth and covered everything from my portfolio to how I interpret trends and execute VM concepts on the shop floor. They were especially interested in how I combine creativity with commercial awareness, and how I’ve worked cross-functionally with teams like Buying and Marketing in past roles. For the next stage, I was given a creative task where I had to produce a mini visual concept for a seasonal display, including mood boards and a rationale. This was both challenging and fun, and gave me a great opportunity to demonstrate my understanding of the Selfridges aesthetic and brand values. I presented it over a follow-up interview. The final stage was more of a cultural fit interview with a senior leader. It focused on Selfridges’ sustainability goals (Project Earth), inclusivity, and how I approach teamwork and customer-centric design. I also got the chance to walk the store and discuss areas where I might enhance visual impact.
- Where do you get inspiration for your visual work and how do you make sure your displays match brand identity and product stories?
- Tell me about a time you had to work within strict brand guidelines and how you remained creative.
- What's your approach when a display doesn't achieve the desired impact on customer engagement?
Senior Level
My interview with Selfridges was a letdown, I'm not sure it was fair or professional. I was really keen and had the skills, but the interview felt like they weren't really listening. The people interviewing me seemed to change their attitude after seeing my ID, which made me worry about bias, maybe even anti-Semitism. They cut the interview short from an hour to 30 minutes and didn't explain the role very well. I didn't get any feedback, and they ignored my follow-up email. I got a standard rejection email three weeks later. It's a shame because you'd expect better from a company that talks about being progressive, but they need to be more respectful and fair in how they hire people.
- Was the same question asked three times, just phrased differently?
- Tell me about your experience with X.
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
