Solutions Engineer
Got referred internally. Recruiter looked at my resume and cover letter and then called me for a phone screen. The recruiter spent most of the call saying I wasn't a good fit based on my resume, mentioning they need someone with deep Python, JavaScript, and SQL experience. Since I'm not a backend engineer, they didn't move me forward. It's a bummer because I got the prep for the technical assessment and felt I would have been great, especially since it was focused on platform functionality. Total waste of time since the recruiter knew this all beforehand and still set up the screen. For context, I'm currently a Sr Solutions Engineer at a company that integrates with Segment and is more technical than a CDP.
- Considering how your resume reads, you seem more suited for sales. How would you convince me, as the hiring manager, otherwise?
- My read of your resume points towards sales. How can you help me overcome that objection with the hiring manager?
Solutions Consultant
The whole thing took about two months, from the first recruiter call to finding out I didn't get the job. It started with a recruiter screen, then I talked to the hiring manager, then I met with people from Twilio/Segment who aren't on my direct team, and finally, I had to do a sales demo for some of the sales folks. It was mostly a good experience, but the sales demo felt like a lot of work, especially since I didn't know their product at all beforehand. They said they went with other candidates because of the manager's preferred sales style, which was annoying but understandable. The biggest pain points were how long it took from start to finish and how much work they expected upfront for such little feedback.

Customer Success Manager
So, first I had a standard screening chat with HR, and they let me through. Then, the next interview was with the hiring manager. Before that, I got some case studies to check out. The whole interview was basically hypothetical situations, which was harder than I thought. The hiring manager was cool and made me feel okay even though I knew I wasn't doing great. I'd totally prep more beforehand next time since there was no chance to talk about my actual work history. If you're good at talking through fake situations, you'll do better than me. I didn't get the job this time, but I'd totally apply again.
- Walk me through how you'd approach a customer who is a good candidate for an expansion.
- Describe your strategy for a customer who seems close to churning.
Account Executive
Started with a recruiter call to chat about my background and skills to see if I was a good fit. Then, I had a 1:1 with the hiring manager where they mostly asked operational questions instead of getting to know me. The next part was a cultural interview with specific behavioral questions, and I'd be careful with my answers because they seemed to be looking for something very particular. The final round involved a mock renewal presentation with the hiring manager and a CSM, using fake customer data that was incomplete. I asked for clarification on the data beforehand but didn't hear back. Honestly, I felt like they already had someone in mind and I was just there to tick a box. The recruiter tried to give feedback but we never reconnected.
- Can you share an instance where you had to give tough feedback to a colleague?
- Describe a time you didn't succeed.
