Technical Case Presentation

I was contacted by a Segment recruiter for this role. The whole process was quite long and detailed, taking about 6-8 weeks in total. It started with a recruiter phone screen, then a phone screen with the hiring manager, followed by a technical take-home assignment. After that, we reviewed the technical assignment and a case study. The next step would have been in-person interviews along with a presentation, and then, I assume, an offer. Unfortunately, I was rejected right before the in-person interviews. Everyone involved was really friendly, helpful, communicative, and transparent. I got a lot of good feedback on my work and the technical assignment. My background is in a related industry with a technical focus. I was disappointed to be rejected for not having specific CDP experience, which they knew from the beginning. The technical assignment was very time-consuming, requiring a deep dive into their tech stack and documentation. It felt like they were really looking for someone who fit very specific criteria, rather than prioritizing aptitude or diversity, and they seemed to invest a lot of time in this search. I even questioned how some of the interviewers themselves would pass their own interviews. Segment seems like a great place to work. If you're interviewing with them, just be ready for a significant time commitment and potentially confusing outcomes.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

My experience with Segment was spread out over 7 weeks and included 8 interviews, many of which were 3 hours long. I even made myself available on Saturday mornings due to the time difference. While the process seemed reasonable, I'm left wondering if they were just gathering information since I didn't get the role. After what they said was a successful completion of discussions, presentations, technical assessments, and checks on cultural fit and role capability, I was told it wasn't 'the right fit'. Apparently, this is common, as they seem indecisive and don't respect your circumstances (I turned down other offers because of this process). So, 'buyer beware' from my perspective. Don't get your hopes too high, but if you do get the job, you'll probably like it.

The process was quick and straightforward. They were very responsive to my emails and polite in their replies, even though the position wasn't a good fit due to specific requirements. We're keeping in touch for future possibilities.
