First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at National Citizens Advice.
Administrator
The interview started with a computer-based test where I was given questions and tasks to complete within 30 minutes. After that, I moved on to a second part of the interview, which was with a panel. They provided the interview questions about 24 hours in advance, and there were roughly 10 questions in total.
- Can you explain your approach to prioritizing tasks?
Help to Claim Advisor
It was an easy, relaxed interview. They gave me a scenario and 6 questions about 20 minutes before we started. I had to talk through the scenario and then they asked more questions related to the job. I had already been a volunteer foundation adviser at another Citizens Advice branch, so I knew about the organization's work. Citizens Advice is big on EDI, so you need to know your stuff!!
- Tell me about a time you advised a client on Universal Credit and what happened as a result of your advice.
- Given that this position involves helping people with UC claims via phone and webchat, what difficulties do you anticipate with these methods, and how would you handle them?
Software Engineer
You submit your CV, and if shortlisted, you go through one interview. They make a decision after that, which is good because it saves time. There's a take-home task that should take no more than 2 hours. The goal is to discuss your approach, even if you don't finish everything. It's a bit challenging, but you get several days to complete it, and the discussion afterward was friendly.
- What are your thoughts on web accessibility?
- How do you approach diversity in software development?
- What are your security considerations for web applications?

I had to do a short task beforehand, about 15 minutes, where I had to give benefits advice to a made-up client. You need some basic knowledge of the welfare system and available benefits to do it well. Then, I had a relaxed 30-minute chat interview. They asked me typical interview questions and also wanted to hear about my advice for the client task.
- Could you share your motivation for wanting to work with us?
- In what ways would your closest friend characterize you?
- How would you handle a situation that is emotionally challenging?
