First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
Social Media Director
The interview process was super professional and well-organized. HR was fast and communicative. They made the stages clear and kept me in the loop about my progress. Honestly, it was one of the best interview processes I've been through because the HR team was so professional, even though I didn't end up getting an offer.
- How would you assess our current social media footprint?
Dining Room Server
The interview process went well, with an external agency. They would call me when needed at the hotel and after a short time I signed the contract. The experience in the hotel was very negative. I was harassed by a guy who, however, suffered no consequences even though I had reported him to those in charge. Moreover, in front of customers they show off all their success but behind the scenes they treat employees very badly.
- How many languages do you speak, and do you enjoy working with customers?
Public Relations Manager
I applied for a PR Manager role at Mandarin Oriental. The first interview was with the direct supervisor, which went well. They then asked me to prepare and present a PR plan for five different topics/locations/seasons to boost guest attraction, revenue, and media coverage. I spent a week developing a comprehensive presentation with visuals for each segment. After that, I had a second interview with an HR coordinator. She mentioned that the Director of HR and the Commercial Director were both new hires and would be the next people to interview me, and that I should expect to wait 2-3 weeks. I waited and followed up, but then received a generic rejection email with no explanation or feedback, and my name was misspelled. It felt very unprofessional after I had invested so much time.
- Can you share instances where you managed challenging PR scenarios previously?
- What specifically about Mandarin Oriental attracted you to this role?
- Please provide a PR plan for 5 segments, covering subjects/venues/seasons, aimed at attracting guests and improving both revenue and media presence.
Duty Manager
I had to wait for over 1.5 hours, but the first round with the FOM was great. They were friendly and professional, and I enjoyed our conversation. However, the wait time was a bit much because she was busy with guests. The second round with HR was the worst. The questions were pointless, rehashing service skills already covered by the FOM, and instead focusing on benefits and company vision. The HR person kept presenting hypothetical scenarios about not matching my salary, asking if I'd still want to work there. It felt like they were trying to make candidates feel bad about their salary expectations or create fear of rejection. They also asked a lot of irrelevant questions that were frustrating. For the first time, I considered rejecting the job offer mid-interview. In the end, I wasn't hired, but I'm okay with that. I'm still interested in the MO Group and would consider future opportunities because one person's behavior doesn't represent the whole company.
