So first up was a group discussion for about 20 minutes. It covered topics like marketing, sales, stocks, and supply chain stuff. After that, they looked at my resume, asking about my internship and projects. Then came the domain-specific part, where they asked about Civil, Mech, or Elec engineering. Finally, there was an HR round, which was pretty easy. They weren't too bothered about extracurriculars; it seemed like CGPA and category were the main things they cared about.

So the HPCL campus placement drive was in August 2024. It began with shortlisting students based on categories. On day one, they had a pre-placement talk (PPT) explaining their work culture, the job role, and what they expected. Then, they did document verification for the shortlisted folks. The next day was group discussion (GT), again split by category. HPCL picked 12 students from the GT — 4 each from SC/ST, OBC/EWS, and General categories, out of about 34 people. After the GD, they conducted personal interviews for the selected candidates one by one.

The whole process happens in 3 steps in case of campus placements. First is document verification. Second is group discussion or group task. Third is the interview which is conducted with 5 members in a panel and this includes both your technical proficiency and behaviour aspects. For undergrad Chemical Engineers, they ask about your latest/summer internship, basic knowledge of the Petroleum Refining industry, and also about the energy sector in India. Your technical knowledge regarding the subject is also asked, and finally, some age-old HR questions. Just be confident and be yourself and you are good to go.
