First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Guy Carpenter.
Senior Machine Learning Engineer
The process had 4 stages: 1. Quick chat with recruiter and a technical test with 10 questions. It was easy. 2. Technical interview with the leader, advanced questions but nothing crazy. 3. A Vibe Coding challenge. I found it ridiculous because the challenge wasn't related to the job, it was too easy and didn't show my skills at all. 4. Discussion about the challenge. It was evaluated by meaningless metrics again because the challenge was to build a TODO App using only vibe coding within 1 hour.
- What is the difference between a tabular bank and a star schema?
Analyst
The recruitment process spanned three months and felt disorganized, with last-minute scheduling demands despite the slow pace. There were long gaps between interview rounds, like six weeks between the first and second. Candidates were expected to be flexible for last-minute interview dates, sometimes due to recruiter vacations. The second round involved an Excel case study, a PowerPoint presentation, and presenting Excel results with only two days' notice. The required skills weren't in the job description or on my CV, so the evaluation criteria were unclear. The company's side was slow and unresponsive, but urgent for the candidate, showing poor planning and lack of respect for time.
- Thinking back over recent years, can you recall any natural disasters?
Data Strategy Co-op
I did this digital interview thing. It was kinda like Hirevue but on Phenom. They hit me with four questions, and I had three minutes for each. You could retake each question up to two times. But once you go to the next question, you can't go back. I messed up the first two questions. For the first one, I needed a retake 'cause I didn't finish in time, but I took too long to hit the button to retake it, and then they moved me on even though I still had time left. For the second question, I also wanted to retake it, but I got all anxious and clicked back to the previous question by mistake, not reading the directions right. So, I couldn't retake it. I learned from my mistakes for the last two. Basically, just chill, read everything carefully, and move through the software fast so you don't time yourself out early!
- Could you share an instance where you dealt with a large, unstructured dataset? What tools and methods did you employ for its organization and utilization, and what were the pros and cons of those approaches?
- Tell me about a personal project you initiated or a new skill you acquired beyond your academic studies. What inspired you to undertake it?
- Describe a situation where you faced a demanding set of tasks with a strict deadline. What steps and actions did you take to accomplish them, and what was the outcome?
Risk Analyst
The Hong Kong branch handled the mainland business and occupied half a floor in a Quarry Bay office building. The interviewer, a mainland woman, seemed resentful. She kept frowning at my resume and asked me three times why I was interviewing for a junior position with three years of experience. She then stated that their risk analyst role isn't what I might think, but rather a job level based on investment bank standards. She also mentioned that I'd likely work until midnight daily for the last three months of the year and asked if I could manage that. The interview concluded with her frowning and asking me to stay for a 1.5-hour written test.
