First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Duane Reade.
Beauty Advisor
The process was pretty quick. You'll meet with three main people: the beauty mentor, the store manager, and your district manager. The store manager or ESM will ask some straightforward, typical retail questions. The beauty mentor will focus on the beauty aspects during their interview.
- What makes you want to be a part of the Duane reade team?
Shift Leader
I went to a job fair on September 28th, and the very next day, September 29th, I got a call to come in for a store interview on the 30th. I'm not sure if it went well or not, but I met some of the staff and interviewed with the assistant manager. They mentioned I was waiting for the rest of my background check to be reviewed, and that was on October 7th. So it's been almost two weeks and I haven't heard back. I'm wondering if that's a bad sign and how long background checks usually take.
- Describe an instance where you had to discipline an employee. What was their reaction, and did the situation improve or worsen as a result?
Shift Leader
Went through a 3rd party screening which was a group interview with over 30 people. We had to answer 5 screening questions for multiple companies. Based on skills and resumes, we were matched with job opportunities. I advanced to an interview with a DR District Manager the same day. An offer was emailed. Since the location was unionized, there was no negotiation. I was given an "on-boarding session" date with multiple new hires to fill out HR paperwork together and ask questions. The orientation is a week long, in a classroom setting.
- Can you describe a specific instance of managing an unproductive employee?
- Tell me about a situation where a team member disagreed with your approach.
- How did you manage challenging scheduling situations?
Cashier
I applied online last Thursday and then called the store yesterday about my application. The manager set up an interview for me the next day at 11am. I went in, didn't have to wait much, and the manager took me to the office. She had me write down my available hours for when I start school in two weeks. Then she asked me some scenario-based questions about customer service. It was a really quick, informal interview, nothing tough. It only lasted about 10 minutes.
- What would you do if a customer was angry?
- What action would you take if you witnessed an employee stealing?
- What would you do if you made an error while handling the register?
