So I applied online for a Graduate Data & Cloud Engineer position at Datacom New Zealand, and the whole thing was pretty smooth, friendly, and quick. A recruiter got in touch with me about a week after I applied to set up a call. They were really clear about the whole timeline, what the interviews would be like, and what kind of skills they were after.

The interview was pretty standard, with straightforward technical questions that felt like they might have been pulled from ChatGPT. My advice would be to brush up on your technical knowledge and have some solid examples ready to explain your customer service experience. It might also be a good idea to think about how you'd answer questions regarding company values and the specific benefits of this role.

The interview felt rushed and tightly packed. It started on time at 1 PM but the last part became a rapid-fire of technical questions. I felt pressured and ended up saying “I don’t know” just to get through the final stretch, especially since I had to start work immediately after. They said I’d have time to ask questions, but only 4 minutes were left by the end. I was hoping to learn more about the team I’d be working with, so it felt like a missed opportunity. I was also surprised to receive short notice the night before asking me to prepare two architecture diagrams of previous projects—even though the role was for DevOps Engineer, not a solution architect. The interview questions also spanned everything from infrastructure to architecture, suggesting that the team operates with very broad responsibilities and little role separation. To top it off, I followed up after the interview but never heard back—no update even two weeks later, which felt unprofessional and disappointing. Overall, the interview wasn’t terrible, but the experience felt rushed, unclear in expectations, and poorly closed out.

The interview process was smooth. They asked relevant information about my experiences in agile delivery, project management, and client management. The communication before the interview via phone call and email were clear. And the post-interview to share the result and the offer is hassle free. Everything is digital, I can read all the documents online, and signed it from my phone.
