The art director talked to me about a designer role at BuyBuyBaby, where they needed someone for web and graphical design. It was a super awkward interview and I knew right away I wouldn't get the job. The vibe was very clique-y, like all basic girls with their Starbucks and pumpkin spice, and they kept saying 'cute' all the time. I showed them my work, explained my design philosophy, and went over project specifics.

I filled out an online application and then went to their open interviews on National Hiring Day. There were 8 of us when the manager arrived, so she took us to the back for a group interview. It was pretty chill, we all introduced ourselves and she asked some basic interview questions. It lasted about 30-40 minutes because we had a pretty big group. Afterwards, she called us out one by one back onto the floor to confirm our phone numbers/info. When she called me, she said she liked me and asked if I could stay for a second interview. I said yes, and me and two others were taken to a separate room and interviewed by the assistant manager. It was still really relaxed, and she asked pretty much the same questions.

I had a 1-hour phone call with HR and then a 1.5-hour in-person meeting with the district manager. It seemed like things went well in both, but they mentioned my salary was a bit high and, with a young baby at home, I might not be the best fit. They said they'd still update me. I sent a thank-you email after the interviews. I didn't hear back for two months, and then just got a generic email saying I wasn't being considered for a role I hadn't even applied for. It's disappointing, especially for a key position, to not get a direct call or at least a heads-up about the decision. A bit of communication would have been appreciated.

I applied online. I had interviews with the recruiter, the store manager, and the district manager. It took three separate meetings over two weeks. I got the feeling the company culture isn't great. All three interviewers seemed to lack basic customer service skills, including their tone, body language, and how they communicated. They didn't give a firm handshake, closed the door too quickly after I left, didn't walk me to the main hall, sat too casually, and the recruiter didn't send confirmation emails. The questions they asked were a bit out there, which made me wonder if the interviewer lacked experience or was profiling me. Honestly, I can see why their employee ratings are so low.
