First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Wood Group.
Fleet Manager
I went through three interviews. The first was with the Business Unit Manager, then the second interview was with the VP of Operations. The third and final interview was with the area manager. They were mainly concerned about my ability to track all assets, rather than just managing a vehicle fleet. They wanted to confirm I had experience with GPS and bar-code tracking. After each interview, I was in contact with the recruiter. The offer came from the recruiter, not anyone at the actual location.
- What is your experience with asset tracking and utilization?
- Do you have knowledge of DOT regulations?
Facilities Engineer
I initially connected with a recruiter at a campus career fair. A few weeks later, they reached out, and I had a 30-minute on-campus interview that was really laid-back, with just a couple of questions. After that, I went for an on-site interview which involved 3-4 separate 30-minute chats with different team members. These weren't typical interview questions; it felt more like introductions. We discussed the job, the company, the industry, and what we do in our personal lives. We all had lunch together, including the interviewers and other candidates. Not long after the interviews, HR called to talk about salary and other details. I didn't hear anything for a few weeks. When I followed up, they eventually told me I wasn't selected for an offer.
- What activities do you enjoy when you're not working?
Production Operator
I talked to the HR lady on the phone and told her I had five years of experience but only on land. She wanted to check my knowledge and set up a test. I took the C operator test first, thinking I wouldn't know much without offshore experience, but I passed. Then I passed the B operator test, scoring even higher. The test results showed I had the knowledge for offshore work, but she still thought I was a C operator because I didn't know some safety systems, which I get. She put my resume in the system, and we parted ways. We chatted about random stuff for a while, and she made me feel really comfortable, like it wasn't even an interview. It's been a week, and I haven't heard back. I've noticed this company, WGPSN, has job openings constantly posted on Rigzone for Lafayette. This operator position has been up daily for a month. It makes sense they can't find experienced people in Lafayette, especially since the requirement is T-2 certified with 2+ years, which fits thousands of local guys. My guess is the HR department is creating a paper trail of active searching to justify their jobs during the oilfield downturn and fill their database so they don't have to wait for interviews when they finally decide to hire.
- What is your salary expectation?
Project Engineer
You apply for the job, and the recruiter goes through applications to pick candidates. She discusses with the manager, and then a phone interview happens. They check communication, knowledge, experience, travel availability, and competencies. If the recruiter is happy, you'll have a 1-on-1 with the manager. If that goes well, an offer is made. After accepting, it takes about a month to start, during which you do medical exams, fit tests, drug tests, and background checks.
- Can you tell me about your experience?
- What is your level of knowledge in this field?
- How would you describe your communication skills?
