After completing the MEPS for an entry-level role, advancement proceeds by 1. passing the yearly mandatory Advancement Exam with a score significantly higher than peers in the same job and class, and 2. getting high marks on your cumulative job performance over the year. The latter involves a lot of bias and favoritism, as it's a subjective review by your direct supervisor and the greater chain of command. POs are ranked against each other based on job importance, performance, and extracurricular duties that benefit the military and Command. It requires a substantial personal time investment outside of work hours to get promoted in the Navy, with many job fields promoting only a small percentage (1-3%) of the workforce each year. Advancement really depends on your connections, who knows you, your ability to navigate politics, and how much personal/family time you've sacrificed. Even with consistently stellar performance, there are no guarantees.

I started in November 2024 by going to an officer recruiter, which was a two-hour drive. I took the OAR test and passed, so I was scheduled for MEPS the next Thursday. The night before, I stayed at a hotel nearby. After finishing everything at MEPS, I turned in my complete application. The selection board met about five months later, and in February, I was selected and given a ship date of August 24th. I was given study materials like the OCS guide, some appendices, a packing list, and workout and diet plans. In late February, an adjudicator contacted me to start the TS/SCI clearance process. From then on, I checked in with my recruiter weekly while getting ready to ship out. But in early July 2025, I got some really bad news – my commission was canceled because of a negative decision about my father's immigration status. He has a green card. I tried to appeal, but the adjudicator wouldn't budge, saying it was 100% unfavorable. This was weird because I barely talk to my dad, never lived with him, only met him a few times, and he never supported me financially. He was a refugee from the 1960s. I felt totally blindsided. I know people in Information Warfare with foreign spouses or parents who are green card holders and had no problems. The whole process felt really slow, lacked communication, and was super frustrating.

They make it seem like this whole process is way more serious than it actually is. You shouldn't be scared, but I'd also suggest answering some questions in a way that's careful. Don't take a job you don't want unless you really don't mind or you need to get to bootcamp fast because of stuff like not having a place to stay. Try to pick a job you're actually interested in or one that's stable for your future after the Navy.
