First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Manchester.
Research and Business Engagement Coordinator
They sent me an interview offer about two weeks after the application deadline and it was easy to pick a time slot using a link they sent. The interview involved a short presentation based on a brief they had emailed beforehand. Afterwards, the panel asked some questions about my presentation and then went through 10 other questions. Most of the questions were situational, focusing on the skills mentioned in the job description. They also asked about EDIA, which is a significant aspect of the institution.
- Could you share an instance where you managed multiple stakeholders, given that this is a requirement of the job role?
PhD Student
I applied and didn't hear back for a while. Then, I contacted my potential supervisor. They mentioned that other applicants had already been informed they weren't successful. About a week later, I was told I'd been selected for an interview. It was with three academics, lasted about 40 minutes, and involved a panel asking questions. No presentation was required.
- Could you tell us about yourself?
- Please summarize your previous research.
- What makes you interested in research?
Research Associate
The email said the interview would be a 30-minute chat about the role and details from the advert. There was a panel of 3: two PIs and one RA. When I arrived, they asked if I had a presentation, but then said it didn't matter because of a mix-up in my email. This caught me off guard, and I felt those who did present had an unfair edge. Honestly, it felt like a waste of time because they didn't seem very interested, suggesting they might have already picked someone, which is typical in academia. My experience was very relevant, but they showed little interest. I even asked more questions about the role and offered some ideas they hadn't considered.
- What motivates your interest in working at this university?
- What would be your recommended sample size for this study?
- What is the initial test you would perform to assess biocompatibility?
Research Assistant
The interview for the Research Assistant position at the University of Manchester was structured yet friendly. It started with introductions from the panel (PI and research team) who then explained the research project. The first part focused on my prior research experience, asking about my dissertation and relevant projects, and how my skills with specific research methods/software could contribute. They also asked how I manage research challenges like data management, deadlines, and collaboration. Then came technical questions about approaching research challenges for their project, including interpreting data and suggesting analysis methods to show problem-solving and statistical knowledge. The behavioral part asked about teamwork and overcoming research difficulties, like unexpected results or design adjustments. Finally, I asked about the role's daily tasks and the project's long-term goals, and their answers confirmed a supportive environment with growth opportunities. Overall, it was thorough but engaging, with a natural flow between technical and personal discussions.
- Can you share an instance of a challenge you encountered during a research project, and detail how you managed it?
