So I applied for the Research Associate position in the Electrical Engineering Department. It was just one round, with a panel that included the project supervisor and the department head. They asked me about why I wanted the job and my technical knowledge for the project. Then there was a really technical part where they showed me some power electronic circuits and I had to explain how the parts worked and how the whole circuit ran.

The email said the interview would be a 30-minute chat about the role and details from the advert. There was a panel of 3: two PIs and one RA. When I arrived, they asked if I had a presentation, but then said it didn't matter because of a mix-up in my email. This caught me off guard, and I felt those who did present had an unfair edge. Honestly, it felt like a waste of time because they didn't seem very interested, suggesting they might have already picked someone, which is typical in academia. My experience was very relevant, but they showed little interest. I even asked more questions about the role and offered some ideas they hadn't considered.

I got an interview invite less than a week after the job closed, and it was for the following week. They flew me to Manchester for it. Six people were on the panel, and they seemed nice and professional. I started with a 10-minute presentation about my work, then they asked questions about that. After that, there were some HR questions, and they asked how quickly I could decide if I got an offer. I was a bit surprised they only asked one question about the job description itself. They said they'd decide in about two weeks, but I heard back three weeks later saying I wasn't successful. They never contacted my references.
