Head of People
I had a call with a recruiter in the US for 45 mins, then a 60 min face to face interview with the UK MD. The interviews felt okay, but a bit too inquisitive without much info shared about the company. For a senior role, I expected more focus on trajectory and goals. The culture sounded very high pressure, high performance, with little emphasis on people, only performance. After nearly 2 hours interviewing, I never heard back with feedback.
- Can you tell me about your experience?
- How does your current company operate?
- What strategies have you implemented at your current company?
Content Writer
I was contacted twice on LinkedIn over a 3-month period by recruiters. The first time, I had a 35-40 minute phone interview that I thought went well because my experience matched the job description, but I was rejected. The second time, another recruiter reached out. I had another 35-40 minute phone interview that also went well. This time, I was given a writing test where I had to write a 1200-1500 word article similar to what they publish on their website. I spent a lot of time on it, followed the instructions, and made sure it fit their content style. I submitted it, but was rejected again via a generic email saying they were moving on with other candidates, with no feedback. This seems to be a common issue for writer/editor roles there, and I think they should provide feedback, especially after making candidates do a significant writing assessment.
- What would a previous manager say is your greatest strength and an area for improvement?
Recruiter
I applied for a recruiter position. The company was responsive and took care in their outreach when interested. The interview process had two stages: one with the Chief of Staff and another with the VP of Portfolio Operations. It was a bit surprising that neither interview was with a direct manager, but I proceeded anyway. They asked questions about recruiting metrics. I had prepared answers, but was shocked not to advance further, especially since the job description mentioned recruiting experience as preferred, not mandatory. After the second round, I sent thank-you notes to both individuals. A week passed with no response. Assuming I didn't get the role due to the sudden silence after initially warm communication, I asked for feedback. After another week, I received a vague response about 'other candidates having a closer match'.
- How do you measure your success as a recruiter using specific metrics?
Director of Web Development
The interview process was long but felt fair and very useful. Every step seemed like a good opportunity for me to evaluate if I should take the job, and hopefully for the interviewers to learn more as they got into the details. It was great talking to everyone, they were all really nice and friendly. I felt like I was judged fairly and treated well the whole time. The recruiting team was also on top of things and quick to respond, which made me feel more confident about my choices to move forward.
- Can you design a system for a big publishing platform that's currently a monolith?
- What's your strategy for sharing components and assets between different codebases?
- Tell me about your leadership approach and your core values.
