Got an initial HR email that was a generic template and the recruiter messed up my name. Responded with availability and then just got a calendar invite, no reply. The interviewer was 15 mins late. They then asked a bunch of rapid-fire questions really quickly and seemed disengaged. The call ended with them saying I'd get feedback right away. Ten days and a few follow-ups later, I got another templated response saying they moved on with other candidates. It felt totally unprofessional, maybe a one-off, but you'd expect better from recruiting.

I had a 30-minute phone screen with their corporate recruiter. She asked about my experience, why I'm interested in working for The Carlyle Group and why I'm looking for a new role. The interview went fine, but their recruiter ghosted me without giving me any updates, even after I sent two follow-up emails. It was unprofessional and disrespectful to not close out an interview by saying whether or not they want to progress further with one's candidacy, especially since the interview process began. Other firms would provide a response, one way or another, but NOT The Carlyle Group. I suppose ghosting extends beyond dating and into the corporate PE world...

Private Equity Associate
First interview, a VP and an Associate will ask you about your resume and past deals. Then, you'll get a take-home case study. You have 48 hours to create a model and presentation for a company. After that, there's a debrief with other investment pros that's like an investment committee meeting. The last interview is a Superday where you meet the whole team, including the partners and other investment professionals.
- Tell me about your resume and transaction experience.
- Can you construct a paper LBO model, including making assumptions and determining the IRR and MOIC?
- Given a target IRR of 20% over five years, what exit multiple is needed if we know the initial sponsor equity and the exit EBITDA and net debt?
Senior Associate
It was a pretty typical interview process. The HR team was responsive when I was scheduling. I went through one or two superdays where I met with 8 or 9 people before my final case study. After they checked my references, which went well, they told me they were going to offer me the job but had to sort out a few internal details. They said I'd hear back from the HR recruiter within 4+ business days. Four months after the verbal offer, I found out the role was put on hold indefinitely. They didn't try to keep me updated or engaged during this long wait, even though I was the only candidate they were considering for an offer. It was super disappointing. On the other hand, the team and interviewers were awesome – very personable and easy to talk to.
