First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Alexander Group (AZ).
Management Consultant
The first round involved an HR recruiter going over my background and resume, and asking about my Excel experience. I haven't done the later rounds, but I'm still in the process. It sounds like the second round will be a behavioral and case interview, and the third round will be an Excel case study.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- What are your thoughts on not working for a larger firm?
- Describe your experience using Excel and PowerPoint.
Business Analyst
I had an initial interview with HR, which went well and covered my experience and technical skills with software like Excel. Then they moved me forward to the second round. Before this interview, they sent me links to review and encouraged me to research the company and relevant studies. However, during the 2nd round, the person interviewing me seemed totally uninterested and cut the conversation short multiple times. Despite all the time I spent preparing prior to the interview, I felt disregarded almost immediately during that interview. As expected, about a week later, I was emailed a rejection letter.
- Could you share a little about yourself?
Consultant
I made it to the initial interview for the Associate Consultant position. The interview was straightforward, and I was asked to discuss my resume and experience with Excel and PowerPoint. However, towards the end of the 20-minute interview, they asked about my vaccination status. I explained that I am unvaccinated and uncomfortable getting vaccinated, but I get tested weekly for COVID. The interviewer mentioned that vaccination is a personal choice, but due to my unvaccinated status, I would not be considered for the role. It seemed like vaccination is not a choice at The Alexander Group, as they do not accept exemptions. I wish they had stated upfront that vaccines are required with no exceptions, or asked this question earlier to save me time applying and interviewing. It was disappointing to see a lack of understanding and empathy.
- Could you walk me through your resume?
- What specific Excel functions do you know?
- Can you describe how you've utilized PowerPoint?
Manager
I was really impressed with AGI throughout the whole process. Everything went smoothly, and I felt I could be open while also learning about AGI. The phone interviews with talent management were pretty thorough, but it made sense because the manager showed a lot of consulting knowledge, which isn't always the case. The in-person interviews were also great. I met with senior management, and everyone was nice, respectful, and very smart. The questions they asked were smart and gave me a chance to discuss my experience and learn about AGI at the same time. It felt like the best introduction to a company I've ever had. The culture seemed really welcoming and respectful. It seems like a great place to work. Weeks 1-2 involved 2-3 phone interviews for screening, mostly about my professional experience and how it applies. Some were more behavioral. Week 3 was a full day on-site in Stamford with 3-4 interviews and a case study. The case study was fair and let me show off my presentation, Excel, and PowerPoint skills. The discussion afterward was insightful and not meant to be intimidating.
- Were there any difficult or unexpected questions?
- The initial screening/phone interview process seemed more thorough than with other firms, which I fully support because it leads to a better and more efficient on-site experience.
- Talent acquisition did a solid job of communicating with the Stamford office prior to my visit.
