& Process

Started with a phone screen, then a case interview. After that, there was a 3-hour interview which included an excel case and a standard consulting case interview. For the excel case, you get 2 hours to work with the data, answer questions, and create a slide deck. They'll ask you questions about the excel case results. Then, a separate consulting case interview followed.

I made it to the initial interview for the Associate Consultant position. The interview was straightforward, and I was asked to discuss my resume and experience with Excel and PowerPoint. However, towards the end of the 20-minute interview, they asked about my vaccination status. I explained that I am unvaccinated and uncomfortable getting vaccinated, but I get tested weekly for COVID. The interviewer mentioned that vaccination is a personal choice, but due to my unvaccinated status, I would not be considered for the role. It seemed like vaccination is not a choice at The Alexander Group, as they do not accept exemptions. I wish they had stated upfront that vaccines are required with no exceptions, or asked this question earlier to save me time applying and interviewing. It was disappointing to see a lack of understanding and empathy.

After a lot of networking with people I know at the company and hearing good things from managers and directors, I got an interview with a hiring manager from Chicago. I felt ready and sure I'd do well. But, the hiring manager was really unprofessional during our chat. They kept cutting me off and asked questions in a really demeaning way. Like, when I was talking about my past projects, they asked, "Do you actually understand how this industry works, or are you just repeating buzzwords you've heard?" while rolling their eyes and sounding dismissive. Thinking back, I remember some of the managers I talked to during networking acted similarly, seemed distracted and had a subtly condescending tone. It seems like the company might have some cultural problems. Except for some junior employees who were nice, encouraging, and polite, the company generally gives off a negative vibe. It looks like senior people take out their frustrations on others. It was really jarring and concerning to see how nicely the junior staff treated me versus how dismissive the senior management was.
