We had a casual lunch. They asked about my connections. The interviewer was a senior VP and wasn't totally clear about the job's expectations or who I'd report to. There were several "red flags" that I overlooked. Unfortunately, within three days of starting, I had significant "buyers remorse." The corporate support was basically non-existent, with no staff skilled in proposal management, writing, or understanding how to win.

So I applied through my college job fair when I was still a senior, and after a phone screen, they invited me to their Arlington SRA office for a formal interview. I met the head of IT and the lead software engineer, they told me about the company and showed me around. Then I sat down with the lead software engineer and he asked me about my engineering skills and my familiarity with specific programming languages to see how I measured up against the other developers. Some languages I knew, others I didn't. I finished by discussing my job goals and assuring them I'd learn what I needed to do the job.

It was pretty easy, all conversations. Started with a phone interview. I did well and got a take home assignment. It was a big task, tricky because I had a full school schedule and other interviews, but I worked on it for a week. That led to an onsite interview. For software developers, these are usually 2-6 hours, meeting several people. I drove 2 hours to get there and interviewed with 3 people for over 3 hours. It went well, I felt good about the company and my performance. Soon after, the recruiter called saying I did great and they wanted to move forward. She mentioned every new applicant meets the head of engineering and CEO.

The SRA recruiter reached out to me first for a screening. She was helpful and gave me good info. After that, she passed my info along to the Hiring Manager. A phone interview was scheduled pretty quickly, like within a day. This call was all about my technical skills and went for about 30 minutes. Three other team members joined in to ask questions. Right after the phone interview, maybe 10 minutes later, they called back to set up an in-person interview. I wasn't sure what to expect when I went in for the in-person. It was also entirely technical questions with the entire team and the hiring manager present. Everyone was really nice, and getting into the building was standard for a secure place.
