First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at River Island.
Sales Advisor
I applied on Indeed and then got an email and text with a link to an AI Chatbot interview. It asked if I had the right to work, my availability, why I wanted to work there, how I'd handle an upset customer, and to rank some tasks. Then I had a video interview where they asked about my favourite River Island item and how I'd sell it, typical sales advisor tasks, what excellent customer service looks like with an example, and what makes a successful team.
- What constitutes a successful team?
- What are the typical responsibilities of a sales advisor?
- Describe your favorite piece of River Island clothing and explain how you would market it to a potential buyer.
Product Manager
You were given a floor walk task where you needed to make observations in three areas: operations, visual, and customer journey. This task was relatively easy, and you discussed it with the hiring manager. Following this, there were interview questions.
- Could you describe your typical management style and how you guide employees?
- What's your approach to merchandising with local area considerations?
- Can you share an example of a mistake you've made?
Assistant Buyer
I had to do a market research task comparing River Island and one of its competitors on bags. Then, I had an online interview over Teams with the buyer for that category. First, we discussed my CV, and then I presented the task I had prepared. After that, we talked about the role, the team, and the logistics of the position.
- Can you identify our main competitors and explain your reasoning?
Team Member
Had a relaxed chat with the store manager in the store. I got some time to pick out an outfit first and then basically sell it to the manager like I would a customer, explaining why I picked it, just to show I can talk to customers, I guess not a fashion expert! They asked about times I've dealt with difficult customers/situations, what good customer service looks like etc. It was under 45 minutes and I heard back by the end of the week!
- Tell me about a difficult customer you had to deal with, or how you would handle one, to find a resolution.
- How would you handle a difficult customer situation to find a solution?
- What does good customer service mean to you?
