So I applied for a retail management job at Dadeland mall, and they called it a "working interview." Basically, I had to help a real customer and close a sale while the manager watched. This wasn't fake, it was a real customer and a real sale that made money for the store. They didn't pay me for it, and I didn't know this was part of it beforehand. I did make a sale, but they didn't offer me the job. I have previous store management experience, and I thought this was pretty messed up. Usually, interviews are like role-playing or watching someone else, not doing unpaid work that actually sells stuff, especially when you don't get the job. People should know what this involves before they agree to it.

The interview process had two initial screening rounds, one with HR and then one with the supervisor. After that, I had to do a short presentation of some data. It was a really friendly and casual chat, no pressure, but I wish I had known more about the presentation part beforehand because I didn't have a portfolio project ready to share at that moment.

So I started with a recruiter call, then a first round with the hiring manager. This hiring manager thought I was overqualified for the role but suggested me for another team in the company. After that, I had to speak with the recruiter again and then had an interview with three members of that team. The thing is, they weren't very punctual with scheduling and postponed the interview twice. Also, if they knew I was overqualified, why make me go through these interviews to reject me later? It was a waste of two months.

The recruiter was really nice, made me feel comfortable. I went through the entire process: first with HR, then with the Hiring Manager, and finally, a practical task. For the last step, it was me, the Hiring Manager, and a Director. I did my presentation, but then the director's questions weren't really connected to my task, which was focused on e-commerce. One question was about a printed magazine, and it totally threw me off. The feedback mentioned communication wasn't fluid in the last step, even though it was fine throughout the rest of the process. Honestly, I wasn't happy with how that last part went.
