First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Great American Insurance Group.
Underwriter Specialist
I put in an application for an Underwriter Specialist job at Great American. The initial recruiter call went pretty well, and they set up a follow-up interview with two Senior Underwriters who would be my managers. The day of the interview, one of the interviewers was late and showed up looking unprofessional, not even apologizing. The other one was great and led the chat. The interview itself was okay, with standard questions, but I felt like they were actually looking for a manager instead of a specialist. The unprofessional interviewer kept asking why I wasn't going for a management role, and I tried to explain that it's a big responsibility and not what I applied for or wanted. I wouldn't have taken the job even if offered because of how they handled it. It's important for candidates to put in effort and present themselves well, so it's not cool when interviewers are late and look sloppy. It makes you wonder about the company culture.
- Why is it that you aren't interested in becoming a manager?
Excess Casualty Underwriter
My interview process went pretty smoothly. The recruiter reached out for a video call pretty quickly, and we scheduled it within a few days. They asked some basic questions about my resume and work history, and how it'd fit the job. The recruiter actually wanted to interview me for a different role than the one I applied for, given my background, which was fine. They said they'd pass my application to the hiring manager, but then I never heard back from them. It was super disappointing and unprofessional.
- Can you describe your experience working in the property and casualty (P&C) insurance sector?
Internal Audit Intern
It was an in-person interview that lasted about an hour with three different interviewers, each taking 20 minutes. You should be ready to talk about why you're interested in working at Great American and to share your personal story. The better you can present yourself, the more successful the interview will be.
- What motivates your interest in internal audit, and specifically with Great American?
Underwriter
Applied online and then a recruiter set up a phone interview. This led to an on-site interview with the VP, Manager, and team members, which was scheduled for two hours. I knew it wasn't for me within the first 15 minutes because the VP bragged about being with the company for 25 years and how the department runs better with them in charge, all while chewing gum. I was ready to leave, but then the next group came in and asked simple, boring questions. They didn't really answer any of my questions about the position. I rushed through it and left, knowing I had no interest in working with this group. The recruiter sent a generic reply saying they went with another route, which didn't bother me. I wouldn't apply to this company again.
