First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Gentex Corporation.
Embedded Software Engineer
Submitted an online application. Got an online skills evaluation two days later, with 6 problems where I had to write a C function. The problem statements were poorly written. The coding was fairly easy, mostly array manipulations. No hard core embedded problems, like bit manipulations. I finished 2/6 problems. 2 of the "fails" crashed their system when tested; the other two "fails", my time expired. If I only had 1 or 2 more minutes on each. Two hours after this evaluation, I got the automated rejection.
- Count occurrences of a string in an array of strings using a C function.
- Eliminate duplicates in an array with a C function.
- Perform array manipulations with a C function.
Medical Product Engineer
Virtual interview for a Medical Product Engineer intern role. It covered some technical problem-solving in a prototype context. Mostly, it was behavioral questions about teamwork and collaboration. Familiarity with materials and prototyping tools was a plus.
- Can you describe a situation where you faced difficulties collaborating within a team, and what steps did you take to resolve it?
Engineering Technician
The interview process consisted of 4 interviews. I initially spoke with HR who mentioned the starting salary would be at least 60k with a great benefits package. The other interviews were with engineering technicians who described the day-to-day tasks. They said to expect working Saturdays and a 50 to 65 hour work week, with good overtime bonuses. A hands-on approach and an electrical background are required; if you don't have one, they suggested taking a few electrical classes to be ready for the position. Currently, only the 2nd shift is available, but the company is expanding, so a 1st shift position might open up. They also cover 100% of future education costs. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is necessary, which they acknowledged is a bit unusual but fair.
- Could you tell me your GPA from high school?
- What was your college GPA?
- In your opinion, where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?
Computer Systems Analyst
The interview process was really negative, even though it wasn't technically difficult. They scheduled a six-hour interview with no breaks, which felt inconsiderate given we couldn't even use the restroom or grab a snack. Some interviewers were unprofessional, using swear words and asking illegal questions. This was definitely one of the worst interview experiences in my 25 years of working, and it was disappointing. They asked for my pay requirements a total of seven times, which is excessive since I'd already given them the information three times before this long day. Each interviewer mentioned that they don't pay industry standards, but tried to compensate with quarterly bonuses. The pay range for the role actually decreased significantly from our initial discussions, by $20k, even though my stated requirements were well within the midrange of industry standards for the area. The six hours felt more like a sales pitch with a few illegal and irrelevant questions thrown in, rather than a typical interview.
- What is the occupation of your parents?
- Could you tell me about your parents' educational background?
- Were your parents college graduates?
