Applied through LinkedIn and went through 4 rounds of interviews (one with the screening manager and 3 separate ones with various people I would interact with). Interviews ranged from pleasant chats to what felt like interrogations where interviewers just went through their list of questions. Everyone was very nice though and I did enjoy talking to them. But by the last interview I honestly felt the position was misrepresented. They weren't looking for someone to do research and investigations (which is what OSINT implies to me) but rather someone to help with their communications and marketing efforts. While OSINT can do that, it was not what I thought this job was. Didn't hear back for several weeks (right before a holiday weekend, which is something I really wish hiring organizations would stop doing) and was unsurprised to hear I did not get the job. I'm not entirely sure I would have accepted it anyway since it does require a relocation (which would not be reimbursed) so ultimately it seemed to work out in the end.

The interview process was mostly about basic electronics, solar systems, and some easy technical questions. They asked about components, circuits, inverters, converters, and how they are used in practice. The panel was nice and they checked if the concepts were clear.

Confirmed questions4 questions
  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Could you explain what an inverter is?
  • And what about a converter, what is that?

Had 4 total rounds. The 1st round was a 30min telephonic round with the recruiter. The 2nd round was a 1hr deep dive call with the manager and skip. The 3rd round was an on-site day long interview with 7 panelists throughout the day that went into understanding my past experience and what I can bring to the table. Honestly one of the most interesting rounds The 4th round was a final 45min round to finalize the offer. The whole process took about 2 months with regular communication and the team was super prompt in their replies.

So, the whole interview thing for an Associate Development Engineer at First Solar is pretty involved. First, you gotta send in your application and resume, and they'll check it out to see if you're a good fit. If you get past that, there's usually a recruiter call or phone chat to talk about your background and why you're into First Solar and renewables. After that, they might hit you with a technical test or assessment, could be multiple choice or problem-solving stuff, depending on the role. Then comes a proper technical interview, probably with some engineers, where they'll dig into your engineering knowledge, like PV systems or materials science, and might even give you a case study to work through. They also wanna see if you'll fit in, so there's a behavioral interview for that, asking about how you work with others and handle challenges. Sometimes, they'll fly you out for an on-site visit to meet the team and see the place, which could involve more technical talks. Lastly, there's an HR or manager chat to sort out the job details, pay, and benefits. If all goes well, you get an offer, but they'll do a background check first.
