Software Engineer Intern
The interview process was pretty straightforward. All the questions were about my past experiences and what I planned to do in the role if I got it. I'd suggest looking over your resume and using the STAR method for your answers.
- Can you recall a time when your opinion was challenged?
- Describe an instance where you faced pushback on your perspective.
- Tell me about a situation where someone questioned your stance.
Nuclear Equipment Operator
Applied in late July and got a call from a senior recruiter in early August to confirm interest and schedule testing. The POSS and BMST tests are required, taken on-site, and last about 5 hours total. BMST is basic math/science, and POSS is like the SATs but with tight time limits. Test prep materials were provided. A week after testing, got a call saying I passed and scheduled an in-person interview for the next week. Interviewed on-site with HR, an operations manager, and the training manager. Went through my resume item by item, answered basic HR questions (why do you want this job, what are your goals), and then 3 behavioral questions requiring STAR format answers. They explained the interview structure beforehand, then discussed the job and training, and I asked questions. I was told I'd hear back in a month, but they never contacted me and ignored my attempts to reach them. Had to ask my recruiter for an answer, who informed me someone else was chosen. Otherwise, the process was very professional and stress-free.
- Tell me about a time you observed unsafe behavior and your response.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision?
Intern
I was in class when the recruiter called, and I missed it so he left a message. I called him right back after class, but he didn't pick up so I left another message. He called back two days later, again while I was in class. I called him back after class and he didn't pick up, so I left another message and called again about two hours later. He finally picked up and asked if I had a few minutes to chat about the job. I said yes, thinking he'd ask about my resume or referrals. Instead, he jumped straight into a formal phone interview, which surprised me because his voicemails never said it was an interview. He asked about my strengths and weaknesses, what I know about the company, my GPA, why I'd be good for the role, and how I manage doing multiple things at once. I did my best given the surprise, but didn't expect a callback since I wasn't ready. My advice: prepare some notes for a phone interview after applying, and be ready for a call that might be an actual interview without warning.
- What is your biggest strength?
- What is your biggest weakness?
- Can you tell me about a time you had to multitask and how you managed it?
Mechanical Engineer
The hiring process was a bit lengthy but ultimately rewarding. It began with an initial phone interview focusing on behavioral questions and future career aspirations. Following the phone screening, there was a four-day testing period, which included a drug screening, all related to basic nuclear power functions and safety as required for plant entry. The subsequent interview consisted entirely of behavioral questions, conducted by both an engineering supervisor and an HR representative, lasting approximately 40 minutes. The interviewers were very approachable and provided feedback at the conclusion.
- Can you share an instance where you assumed a leadership role?
- Could you describe a situation where you encountered stress and had to employ coping mechanisms?
- Regarding your past employment, what was something you learned rapidly, and what took you longer to grasp?
