Software Development Manager
So, a recruiter Kevin from LinkedIn reached out about this Software Engineering Manager gig. We chatted, and yeah, the role was more about managing than coding deep stuff. They said it'd be two rounds. After the first chat, they said I'd hear back in a few days. Well, a week went by, and I had to chase them up myself. Then, my second round with the hiring manager was set up. That talk was pretty good. Next up, they quickly set up another interview with two Product Owners, one of them actually used to do the job. Those chats were good too. But then, a few days later, surprise! They said there'd be another interview with a Senior Director. This wasn't what we originally talked about with the two rounds. I get wanting to check everything, but changing the plan mid-way without telling me clearly felt a bit disorganized. The last interview was way more technical and focused on performance than the job was supposed to be. It even went over time because the interviewer wanted to keep going, so I barely got to ask any questions. For a leadership job, it should be a two-way street, right? They casually mentioned they get rid of the bottom 10% of performers regularly. As someone who's all about coaching and helping teams grow, not ruling by fear, this made me wonder about their whole management style and if the company is stable. When I asked more, the answers were pretty shallow and didn't really dig into how they help employees develop. It's been over two weeks now with no word. So, even though the separate chats were okay, the whole process felt messy, unclear, and not aligned. It made me question the company culture and how leaders operate. I decided not to move forward, and I'm good with that.
- Hiring manager: What are your thoughts on employee performance and how do you assess code quality? Also, tell me about your cloud experience and why you feel you're a good fit.
- With 2 product owners: It was very conversational, how do you collaborate with product owners and can you elaborate on your past experiences?
- Senior director: Can you discuss your cloud experience, performance management strategies, CI/CD practices, and how you evaluate code quality?
Video Conferencing Support
The interview involved two tough online tests. The first one checked my English skills (comprehension and accuracy), and the second one was about my numerical and logical abilities. After that, I had an interview where we talked about my past experience, what I can do, and if I'm a good fit for the job.
- Can you tell me about your experience using video conferencing platforms?
- How comfortable are you with managing live video conferencing sessions and what challenges have you faced?
- What is your experience in handling technical issues that arise during live sessions to ensure they run smoothly?
Project Manager
I had 3 video interviews, each lasting an hour, spread across different days. The first one was with the team manager, and it was a friendly, personal chat. The second interview was with the VP, and it was packed with very technical and challenging questions. The third interview was with a team member, and it was a light conversation. A week after the three interviews, I emailed the recruitment manager, but I was informed the VP was on vacation and I never heard back. It was a really bad experience.
- Could you describe your experience with technical questions related to project management?
Marketing Operations Coordinator
I applied for the Marketing Operations Coordinator role. A recruiter reached out stating it was a great match for my background. Following a brief phone screen, I had a video call with the hiring managers. During this interview, the role seemed to shift from a general marketing operations position to solely handling email campaigns for one client. I found this unusual, but it was within my capabilities and the disclosed salary was acceptable. The next day, I noticed a LinkedIn listing for a Digital Marketing Specialist that precisely covered the same functions discussed in the interview, in the same order. I contacted the recruiter to ask if there was any misunderstanding, as the digital marketing specialist role offered a slightly lower salary. I never received a response from her. Three weeks later, I received an automated 'sorry…' email from Workday late at night. This company seems disorganized!
- The questions don't matter since they interview you for a different job than the one you applied for.
