First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Edelman Financial Engines.
Client Service Associate
My interview with Edelman Financial Engines was a really good one. It had three parts: first, I spoke with a recruiter, then I had interviews with the hiring manager and a financial planner. Everything was set up well, super professional, and they kept me in the loop. The recruiter was quick to respond and let me know what to expect. The hiring manager and planner made me feel comfortable while still asking good, relevant questions. It felt like a thorough but quick process, and I liked how open they were about everything. It gave me a good feel for the company vibe and what the job involves.

The interview process has 4 rounds. The first 3 are technical interviews focusing on system design and data structures. You'll get questions testing your programming knowledge and how you solve problems. There are also questions on programming languages. These tech interviews check your problem-solving and how you tackle tough technical problems. The last round is an HR interview to see if you fit the company culture, your soft skills, and if you align with the company's values and mission.

You'll go through a 3-part interview. First, there's a recruiter call, which is basically to make sure you're a good fit for the role and the company. Then, you'll have a video interview with your direct manager and one of their colleagues. This will include some questions and a role-play scenario. The role-play is focused on building rapport, starting a discovery conversation, asking open-ended questions, and listening actively to the client. If the first role-play goes well, you'll have a third interview which is another role-play. This one's designed to see how you take the feedback from the previous role-play and apply it. Practicing conversations as if you're meeting a client for the first time and encouraging them to share their financial goals is recommended. The key is asking lots of questions, and you don't need to offer recommendations or advice, just use your active listening skills.
- Can you share an instance where you made an error in a client interaction and what steps you took to avoid repeating it?
Client Service Associate
My interview experience with this company was disappointing and frustrating. The whole thing took over two months, and I had to follow up multiple times just to get an update. Communication was inconsistent and lacked transparency, making the process unnecessarily stressful. I met with five different people. I was very clear from the beginning about my salary expectations to avoid wasting anyone's time. Despite that and the job description, I was eventually given an offer significantly below my stated expectations and the advertised range. After investing a lot of time and effort, preparing for interviews, attending multiple meetings, and following up repeatedly, the lowball offer felt disrespectful and disingenuous. This experience left a bad impression, so I'd caution others to clarify expectations early and tread carefully.
- Describe your approach to building trust with high-net-worth clients or long-term investors.
- Can you share an instance where you managed a challenging client situation and how you successfully resolved it?
- Please explain the process you follow to ensure that account onboarding, transfers, and documentation are managed accurately and efficiently.
