First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Downer.
General Manager
I did an initial Teams interview with three people on the panel. Two were 15 mins late. It went really well from my POV and I was told I'd get an answer about moving on. A week later, I contacted the internal recruiter and left a message. Called again the next day, same thing. I was completely ghosted. Four weeks passed and they asked me to come in for a face-to-face interview. I declined because if that's how they treat people they want to work for them, how do they treat their current workers.
- What is your professional specialty?
Administrator
So I had an interview booked on Teams, it was a panel interview with two managers. We had some audio issues at the start, so I had to use my phone. They had a list of about 7-8 questions that seemed to be from a generic questionnaire, and they were going through them on screen. One manager barely looked at me, asking just one question. I asked about the next steps, and they said I'd hear back mid-month because of many applicants. The recruitment lead called the next week to say I wasn't shortlisted. I do appreciate the Circle Back Initiative though, it's good to get closure.
- Could you tell me about yourself?
Project Coordinator
First, there was an HR Phone Call where we talked about the job offer, benefits, and what happens next. I was told to prepare questions about company policies and the start date. Then, I met with Managers to understand the role, my responsibilities, and how the team works. I prepared questions about what they expect from me and how success is measured. Finally, I had a Follow-Up with HR to clear up any last questions from the manager meetings and sort out the offer details. After that, there was Negotiating the Offer where I asked for better salary, benefits, or working conditions, using industry standards and my personal needs to back up my requests.
- Can you describe your proficiency with Microsoft Office?
- What is your experience with project management?
Mechanical Engineer
The interview itself was amazing. The main Supervising Engineers were amazing to talk and gain much insight on what my tasks were meant to be if hired. I am sure whoever is working under their guidance will gain a great deal of knowledge on the business. My complaint is with the HR, I was promised to be contacted on several times and even told I was going to be given a contract “soon” which never came. Then, the HR person just ghosted me instead of perhaps just advising they have moved on for a better suited candidate (which is totally fine).
- Can you discuss your engineering background and how it would be advantageous for our company?
