The Director, Customer Success role at Canary Technologies has been open for a while, and after going through the interview process, it's understandable why it's still vacant. My interview got rescheduled three times last minute, which felt like they were just reacting to things and not very stable in their operations. A lot of the chat was about the VP's personal background, not really about the business, the team's current state, or what success looks like with clear expectations for the job. The questions they did ask seemed more suited for a frontline manager than someone in a director role. The most frustrating part was when I asked about KPIs, success metrics, decision authority, and ownership, and didn't get any clear or solid answers.

Behavioral Technical Case Presentation

The interview started with a recruiter call. Then there was a chat with a current CSM, which was a bit unusual but maybe they prioritize coworker compatibility. It went fine for me. Next up was a take-home assignment. If that went well, the next step was a 30-minute meeting with the leader of CS Operations. I didn't get past that last stage. The whole process wasn't bad, but it was weird not to be interviewed by someone who would directly manage me, especially since none of the interviewers for this role at Canary are direct managers of CSMs. It's odd to get to the later stages without talking to a potential direct manager. Oh, and a tip: don't ask the Operations leader why your take-home was good, because she called that question 'inappropriate'. Just a heads up.

The interview process had several steps, including a presentation and more chats with different people on the team. Everyone was really nice, but the whole thing felt pretty disorganized. There were a lot of delays, the interviewers kept changing last minute, and it wasn't clear who the actual hiring manager was. I know smaller companies are busy, but the process lacked structure and felt unprofessional. They only gave feedback after the very last stage, even though they could have discussed the same things earlier. Maybe they should rethink the number of stages and make sure the team is on the same page about what they want. It took up a ton of time to do the task and then go to so many interviews. Just wanted to share some honest thoughts for future candidates and for the company to maybe make things better.

Behavioral Technical Coding

The interview process started with two rounds with the VP of Engineering, then a take-home assignment. After that, there were two more rounds with an Engineering Lead and the Co-founder. The whole thing was pretty fast, finishing in under 3 weeks from the initial call to the offer. Communication was quick too, no waiting around. The take-home was kinda tough; I missed spotting a bug in the code but caught it after the VP's first look. We talked a lot about QA philosophies, why I'd be a good fit, and how to do security testing on APIs and other practical stuff, not just quizzes.
