First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Yahoo India.
Systems Engineer
It was a campus interview. First round was a technical and aptitude written test. 15 people cleared. Technical questions covered a wide range of topics like DBMS, Networking, OOP, and Unix. The second round focused on programming. 7 people cleared this round. We had to code on a Linux platform, specifically Fedora. Scripting languages like Perl and Python were more favored than OOP languages. The questions were not overly complex; the key was to provide correct and optimized approaches, not necessarily complete code. The third and fourth rounds were technical interviews, primarily focusing on Unix and networking. 4 people advanced after these rounds.
- Given a log file with date, time stamp, IP, and frequency, write a program to output the IP addresses sorted by their frequency.
C++ Backend Developer
This was my first and hopefully last interview experience with Yahoo! India. It was quite disorganized. A recruiter reached out about the C++ Backend Developer role, and after a month, I was shortlisted. The first interviewer seemed very inexperienced and kept changing questions, asking me to code then switching to other topics, then going back to the code, creating a lot of unfinished questions. The second round had two interviewers, one of whom was fidgety and asked questions while the other just watched. They took us to lunch where they discussed personal work-related gossip and showed jokes. The final round was alright, but the interviewer seemed disengaged and even discussed Yahoo's unstable policies, almost as if venting. The questions focused heavily on compiler flags and UNIX commands, which felt odd given the role's emphasis on C++ coding.
- Could you tell me how many distinct compiler error messages you've encountered?
Engineering Manager
The interview process had some scheduling issues initially, with HR communicating a different start time than what was actually happening on the day. While the subsequent rounds were generally okay, it was very tiring to have them all scheduled on the same day. There were about 7-8 rounds, and many questions were repeated by different interviewers. One technical architect seemed really preoccupied and rushed during his round, not paying close attention and having a very narrow focus. The management interviews were better, but again, lots of overlap between the managers, making the whole experience quite draining.
- For a management position, the technical architect asked about designing the technical architecture for a complex data-based system, which felt more suited for a full-time technical architect role.
Software Engineer
I had a really bad time interviewing with Yahoo India. Even though many people told me it was a sinking ship and I shouldn't apply, I went for it anyway. It started with two phone calls and then four technical rounds. The HR told me the feedback was good and an offer was coming. Then, they wanted me to interview with another team. The manager asked me a design question, and when I started to answer, he just got up, said my basics were flawed, turned off the room lights, and walked out. After that, the HR asked me to interview with yet another team. After a total of 11 rounds, which dragged on for 3 months, they still haven't made a decision and are blaming upper management.
- Tell me about the 25 horses race problem.
- Can you solve the tic tac toe problem?
