Waffle House Interview Questions
& Process

After applying to Waffle House, I got contacted by a recruiter who wanted me to type out detailed answers to 10 questions. This felt like unpaid work and I thought it would at least lead to a conversation. Instead, I was rejected a few days later without any interview or feedback. This process is one-sided and outdated. It shows a lack of respect for applicants' time and effort. It also makes me question how the company values people. If this is how they hire, I can only imagine what internal communication is like. I would caution others about investing significant time in this application process without clear expectations upfront.

So I applied and the recruiter called me, we talked about the job and my background. Then I had an in-person with 2 division managers, even though the job I wanted was filled, they wanted me to interview since I was open to relocating. After that, I had to take a management assessment. Then another in-person interview with the area manager. That same day, they asked me to come in for the weekend to do a 2-day in-unit shift. It really shows you how Waffle House works! HR called Monday, went over the background check and drug test for the contingent offer, and then the formal offer comes.

After I applied, they sent me 7 questions to answer as a first step before an actual interview. I tried following up multiple times, but they never gave me any feedback or updates on my application status. I spent time writing thoughtful answers to their questions, but then they just ghosted me, even though they were the ones who reached out. They ignored all my attempts to get an update. It felt pretty disrespectful to be treated like that. A quick message saying they moved on would have been enough.

The District Manager reached out to me on LinkedIn to set up a phone screen. After that, we set up an in-person interview at a local restaurant. Then, I was invited to the 'In Unit' step, which involved working two full days, in uniform, at one of the restaurants. This included a 9-hour shift, then coming back late for an hour to observe night operations, followed by a second 8-hour shift. This whole 2-day thing was completely hands-on. They gave me a uniform (polo, hat, name badge), but I had to buy my own shoes, slacks, t-shirts, and a new belt to fit the dress code. During the 'In Unit' time, I did a lot of cooking (bacon and other meats), bussed tables, helped with inventory, took out trash, shadowed servers, helped customers, and even picked up trash in the parking lot. They said I'd be paid for this time and had me fill out a W-9. Once the 'In Unit' was done, they told me they were considering a few candidates and would be in touch in a few weeks. I never heard from them again, and they never paid me for the 'In Unit' time like they promised. I've tried contacting both the District Manager and the HR Director, but they've ghosted me.
