First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Faculty
I applied for an adjunct position through higheredjobs.com. I got an interview invitation and spoke with the healthcare administration department chair and the program manager. They said I'd hear back, but I was ghosted and never got an update. When I checked the university's online application system, my application was gone. I won't forget how I was treated.
- Could you describe your qualifications and experience in online teaching for this adjunct position?
Process Engineer
The interview process was great and made me feel comfortable. It was a panel of 4 people, and I had a good experience. The questions were mostly about the job role and walking through my resume. The interview lasted about 30 minutes, with around 5-6 questions asked to understand if I was a good fit.
- Can you walk me through your resume?
- Tell me about your experience as a Process Engineer.
- How do you approach problem-solving in a process engineering role?
Equal Opportunity Specialist
I answered some prepared questions from three interviewers. Some questions were directly about the Equal Opportunity Specialist job, but others, like asking me to describe a time I developed a protocol, didn't seem related to the job description.
- In your own words, what is Diversity Equity Inclusion?
- Can you share an instance where you developed a protocol?
Coordinator
So I had an initial video interview that went pretty well and then I got an offer for a second interview. The department mentioned they couldn't cover travel costs. They sent an email saying they really encouraged candidates to come in person for the 1-hour interview, but it didn't explicitly say it was required. I live out of state and honestly couldn't afford to fly, drive, or get a hotel just for an hour-long interview for a job I might not even get. I explained my situation and asked if a virtual interview was possible since the email didn't state in-person was mandatory. They told me it was a requirement for candidates to come to campus. They called it an 'equity issue,' but I thought it was unfair to people with less money, and they could have just offered a virtual option to everyone. I don't get why, if they can't pay for travel, they expect candidates to pay if they don't have the money. I had to withdraw my application because I couldn't afford the travel, which was a bummer because I liked the job and the people from the first interview. It definitely made me hesitant to apply to more VCU jobs.
- What would you do if an older faculty member wasn't on board with the new system?
