First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Virginia.
Desk Assistant
Had a basic interview with the supervisor. We went over the responsibilities and tools they use. They asked about my ability to handle sensitive student information and my knowledge of academic honesty. We also discussed the accessible technology the team uses, such as Abbyy.
- Tell me about your experience with project management tools like Jira.
Postdoctoral Researcher
The University of Virginia has this habit of posting jobs they don't really plan on filling. It's even worse because the staff spend a lot of time interviewing people for these fake jobs, wasting everyone's time. I talked to Dr. Weaver about a postdoc position. He said that even though they advertised for several roles like Scientist and Postgraduate Researcher in his new lab, he was only going to hire for one. This makes me wonder about how UVA hires, since they let professors trick job seekers with non-existent openings. It's pretty bad that a place like UVA would do this and lead on good candidates.
- Can you go over the details in your CV? It seems like they might not have reviewed it beforehand.
Manager
First, there was a recruiter call. Then, there were 3 more interview rounds total - 2 of them were remote and 1 was onsite. The onsite interview was a multi-hour one where I met with lots of stakeholders. Lunch was also provided. The difficulty was average. They treated me respectfully and communicated with me frequently throughout the process.
- Many questions about diversity and inclusion were asked.
Editor
I had a zoom call with the head of the editorial team at first. After a couple weeks, I was asked to come in for a 3.5 hour in-person interview. A recruiter gave me a tour of the place and the building I would work in, and then introduced me to the head of the editorial department. She then passed me to the rest of the editorial team, and editors asked me questions about my background and experience one by one. The head of the editorial team came back, gave me an editing test, and asked more questions. They said I should hear back by the end of the next week. Since I didn't get any calls or emails, I emailed the recruiter and found out that the job was already given to someone else. Everyone was nice and professional, but a 3.5 hour interview for the second step seemed a bit much.
- Can you tell me about how you handled competing priorities?
- How did you manage conflict?
- Describe your approach to deadlines.
