Research Assistant
The hiring manager, a professor who thought I'd be a good fit for their lab, conducted the interview. The process can differ for each professor. Mine was a 30-minute chat about my background and potential projects after admission.
- Can you discuss your background?
- What was your previous research experience like?
- What projects are you considering working on after admission?
Assistant Professor
After about two months from when I applied, I had a brief Zoom call. Then, the main part of the interview process was two days spent on campus. This involved several one-on-one meetings, I gave a guest lecture, and there were a few group interviews, one of which included the deans.
- Tell me about your research goals.
- How do you feel about teaching?
- What's your stance on service commitments?
PhD Student
The interview was conducted via Zoom. They asked about my prior research background and my aspirations for the doctoral program and beyond. They also inquired about my interest in potential collaborations with faculty members within the department. Overall, it was a positive and welcoming experience.
- Can you tell me about your previous research experience?
- What are your goals for your PhD program?
- What are your post-doctoral aspirations?
Assistant Director
I had a first round screening interview, then an in-person interview with the search committee, campus partners, and unit leadership, including my potential supervisor. After meeting with the supervisor, she asked to check references, and I said yes, but they never actually contacted them. She emailed me a few weeks later asking to chat. I set up a time, but she never called. I followed up two business days later, but never heard back from them again.
- How do you handle managing competing priorities?
