University of Central Florida Interview Questions
& Process

So, during my university research interview, we talked about my passion for propulsion systems. I also presented my previous project results and answered some technical questions. I made sure to express my enthusiasm to contribute innovative ideas to their ongoing experimental studies.

This org uses one-way video interviews through Spark Hire as a first step. Research shows these kinds of interviews can introduce bias. They don't allow for conversation, clarification, or human connection—you're judged on a recorded response only. Studies found asynchronous interviews can lead to decisions based on presentation rather than qualifications. Research in Personnel Psychology also shows these tools reduce perceptions of fairness and can negatively impact candidate experience. For a public institution, this feels impersonal and outdated—especially for roles needing strong interpersonal skills. A more equitable, human-centered process would better reflect the values many institutions claim to uphold.

Some of the colleges within UCF are looking for unicorns -- ye be warned. I applied for a position that had already been reposted at least once; it was reposted again the morning of my interview. When I asked about hiring timelines and when to hear back, my interviewer simply refused to provide any information and acted as if HR reposted it without their permission. What an incredible waste of a candidate's time and effort. I ended up accepting a position with another college that didn't want me to wait around for roughly one million years until they decide if their mythical ideal candidate really exists.

I interviewed via Zoom on 1/10/25 with two senior people from the UCF College of Medicine's Office of Access, Belonging & Community Engagement. They asked me general questions about my prior academic work experience and how I manage organization and task prioritization. They mentioned they need an administrative assistant who can handle diverse duties like writing copy and scheduling meetings. The interview was friendly overall, but one of the senior members seemed a bit impatient, especially when I inquired about his proudest accomplishments at the College of Medicine. While I think I could work with him, I didn't get the impression I'd enjoy him as a supervisor.
