First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Tile Shop, Inc..
Design Consultant
It was an easy and fast process. Pretty laid back but with an emphasis on sales. Design is a big part of the job but the sales experience will really help overall. Just one interview and that's it if you're the right fit.
- What makes you believe you would be a suitable candidate for this role?
IT Systems Analyst
The interview process involved several steps. First, I had an interview with a manager who asked me about my future aspirations and past experience. They also spent a lot of time trying to sell the company to me. A few days later, I received feedback that I was perceived as too entitled because I expressed ambitious career goals for after I graduate. Despite this negative feedback, I proceeded to a second interview. This time, I met with someone who might have been the IT manager. They asked basic questions, then gave me a tour of the IT department and introduced me to the team. Afterward, I sat with the team members who seemed unprepared and had no questions ready. I attempted to have a normal conversation, but the atmosphere was so awkward it became even more so. The entire experience was a disaster, and after reading employee reviews, I'm relieved I didn't get an offer.
- What are your 5-year career goals?
- Can you describe your past experience?
- Tell me about your ambitions upon graduation.
Talent Acquisition Specialist
The first phone interview went great. The first in-person interview was also good, and I was asked about my past roles and responsibilities. The Talent Director then brought up some unprofessional situations involving 'big personalities', office talk, and cursing, and a candidate who stalked them via email because they didn't get a retail job. A few days later, I was invited back for a lunch to discuss benefits and compensation, thinking I would get an offer. They said the meeting was to go over benefits and compensation. The lunch was awkward, with the interviewers constantly talking about their frequent happy hours and their plans to meet incoming staff at the same restaurant for leadership development. They asked me the same question multiple times, rephrased, and I gave the same answer each time. The head director seemed distracted, making the lunch rushed and leaving me with a bad feeling about how they treat candidates. I never heard about an official offer and later found out through someone else they were not moving forward with me. The whole process was sloppy and unprofessional. They implied an offer would happen but then rejected me, saying the director didn't have time to transition me into a corporate role and that I was too retail, despite the job description preferring retail experience.
- How would you adapt to working in an office environment?
- What do you anticipate it will be like working a typical Monday-Friday schedule?
- Could you outline your present roles and responsibilities?
Sales Consultant
The interview process was typical, and I was initially excited to speak with them. However, after doing some research, I became concerned. While I enjoyed the interview itself, I didn't get satisfactory answers to my questions about the store and market conditions in my area, given it's a sales commission job. I discovered that the current manager is the fourth one in less than a year and that the store is consistently understaffed, which I found unsettling. The manager's responses didn't alleviate my concerns. My main goal was to ascertain if I genuinely had a chance to succeed, rather than just being sold on a role.
