Outside Sales Representative
A recruiter reached out via email and then phone. I then had an interview with a sales manager who questioned me intensely for 45 minutes. This is a 'hunter' type role, and all sales employees are middle-aged, 'used car salesman' types. This job is all about hard sales numbers, and if you don't have them, you won't get hired. The manager asked if I could last up to 4 months in training and initial sales without income, so prepare to have savings. The lowest earner in sales made $1500 last month, and the top earner made $43000. If you can easily charm your way into the company's and your client's hearts, this job is for you.
- Were there any particularly difficult questions asked?
- If you don't automatically fit into their preconceived company culture in appearance and experience, will they work hard to find reasons not to hire you, and does this manifest in repeated questions designed to segue into a walk out the door?

Applied and had a zoom interview scheduled for the next day. The interview started out normally, but then the interviewer began asking me about my experience with a marketing team. After that, they continued asking about terms I was unfamiliar with. When I asked questions about the company, the interviewer dodged them and gave half-hearted answers. While I was in the middle of my last question, they rudely interrupted me saying "that's it for this interview..." and then hung up. I get that I might have been a bit under-qualified for what they were looking for, but interviewees deserve respect for taking time out of their day to talk with you.
- Are you familiar with the term 'target lead'?
- Can you describe your experience working with a marketing team?

First you'll meet with a manager, watch a video, and fill out some paperwork. The manager will also give you a section of a presentation to memorize. You'll have about two days to memorize it before your next interview, where you'll deliver that part of the presentation to the manager as if they were the homeowner. You might mess up, it happens to everyone. Just try not to mess up too badly, or you won't be asked back. If you do fairly well, you'll then interview with the regional manager. If all goes well, you'll wait for your background check to come back clear of DUIs or anything more serious. If everything is good, you'll go through an intense 2-week training program: the first week is extremely intense System Pavers University, and the second week is online training. Note: If you don't pass your first week exam with 85% or higher, you won't continue employment. They take that very seriously. Good luck.
- Can you tell me about your sales experience?

It was pretty fast. They started with a phone call to see if you could talk well, it took about 10-15 minutes. Then you go in to meet a manager, still checking if you can handle talking to people and aren't too nervous. If they like you, they give you a short script to learn and come back to present. You meet some department heads, again to see if you're friendly, talk well, and make eye contact.
- Tell me about a time you overcame an objection.
- Describe how you handled an objection in the past.
